I took up pier fishing last month here in the northern Gulf of Mexico and have been having more fun than a backsliding Baptist. Have caught a number of good king mackerel and a couple of good bull reds, also some sharks, which I broke off. It's a blast. Are there any other pier rats out there?

My brother is turning 50 in April and he is exremely hard to buy for. I've decided to get him a fly rod/reel that he can use on big fish like tarpon or salmon. The problem is that I know nothing about them. Does anyone know of a good combo?
