In the NC mountains i have had some pretty good luck with smaller rooster tails. I catch smallmouth in the rivers up here, I'm not so sure about lake smallmouths.
When the water warms up in the St Lawrence River, I prefer "Rattle Traps" in the areas where there are a lot of rocks. Otherwise, I prefer Spinnerbaits. www.letsgofishin.us
I have found that Delong's Black Tadpoles and Baby Slugos produce for me anywhere there are Bronze Backs, If you can keep them away from the Largemouths.
