Can you tell the size of a black bear by the size of its paw print? If so how?

After guiding bear hunters for more than 45 years, i have always been amazed at how small the paws on a 300 pound bear can be and how large a paw a 200 lb. can have. I find they are a lot like humans, some big men have small feet and hands and the opposite for small men. I still pay very much attention to tracks but i pay more attention to the size of the droppings.

put your hand in the track and pull your thumb up against the side of your hand. bend your fingers (not thumb)at the middle joint. if the track is the size of your hand it is generaly a shooter. 270 or so pounds and up.

For Black bears we generally use this as a rough guide....every 1" of print width = 1 foot in body lenght. This formula isnt carved in stone but usually is a pretty good gauge.
