DSMbirddog........... I have seen you get tagged 'NO' on your comments and what you wrote was just fine and answered the person's question. Go figure, right.
I seen more 'NO' ratings on here this year than in the past. I remember when Bo, DropjHook was on here and we would discuss various topics that would come up. People would go back and forth voicing their thoughts and if you were full of BS we would let you know. I'm not on OL like I use to be; this site has lost some of its pizzazz. I check it out though and see what is happening.
Take care, Johnnie
Don't worry too much about the ballistics chart.
It all depends where and what you hunt. 308 is great for woods. If you hunt the Mts. out West the 300 has the most range. 30-06 is very versatile. They have all kinds of ammo in 30-06. Consider how much you like to shoot and where you hunt- 308 ammo is cheap and it has less recoil and longer life.
The 300 Win Mag provides significantly higher velocities, improved trajectory, and increased retained energy with the same bullet weights used in the 308 and 30-06. The tradeoff, however, is a larger powder charge, higher pressure, more recoil, and shorter case life than the other two.
Who is the idiot that gave me a 'NO' on my comment? Why don't you let me know so we can chat about this.
Also, to the person that gave me a 'NO', where is your intelligent answer? Evidently you know nothing about cartridges otherwise you would have given your expert comment.
Putting ballistics to the side. The difference is the .308 is a short action cartridge and the 30-06 and 300 Win.(Mag) are long action cartridges. The .300 Win. Mag is a belted cartridge where as the .308 and 30-06 are not.
The differences are extremely small.
-Trajectory wise, the .308 and .30-06 are extremely similar, but the 300 win mag will give you a little extra range.
-Any animal within range will not know the difference between any of these cartridges.
-All three of these cartridges will take down anything in North America.
-I am going to guess that you are the average hunter and recommend the .30-06.

The .308 - big. The 30-06 - bigger. The .300 - biggest. There you go, that's the difference.
