They are not the same animal. Coyotes are.... well coyotes. Coydogs are hybrids: half coyote, half domestic dog. A coydog is the results of a male coyote mating with a female domestic dog. There is also a dogote, its when a male domestic dog mates with a female coyote. Where the cross-breeding of animals is concerned, the father's species gives the first part of the offspring's name.

The coydog is a name for the larger than average coyotes the north eastern States and Provinces(Canada) produce.Old timers believed the coyote cross bred with the Algonquin Wolf and/ or domesticated dogs on its journey eastward through Ontario from the western States/Provinces becoming much larger in body size than the western coyote population, this belief is still a heated debate amongst many East Coast outdoorsmen.I believe the coyotes are significantly larger for the same reason the North Eastern deer population is larger in body size than their southern brethern....the harsher winters only allow for the largest, strongest individuals to survive, thus breeding larger offspring.Seeing how the deer are larger in body size the coyotes had to adapt(which they do freakishly well to almost any climate) and grow larger to deal with the larger prey avaible to them.
Ive spent time in the Canadian Rockies and have seen first hand what wolves do to any coyote that crosses their path, so I have a hard time believing that the Algonquin Wolf would rather breed with yotes than kill and eat them, and Ive never seen a yote that had any domestic dog characteristics.
