Here in IL we can hunt as close to the road as possible without being on the road. We cannot shoot across the road though, which is smart, i dont hunt along the road though dont find it to be too smart.

By law in NB paved roads of any kind you must be minimum 100yards away, unpaved logging roads you can hunt right on them here, as long as you are 300 yards from the nearest dwelling.
We have several large paper/timber companies that allow sportsmen to use their lands for a small(though increasing yearly) gate fee. They have thousands and thousands of miles of these wooded logging roads to choose from and they can be very isolated with minimal traffic.Infact most require a 4x4 for safe passage. If it wasnt for the fact that these woods roads are legal to hunt on or near, big game hunting in the province especially for moose, would be extremely difficult. The province requires that for any moose, deer or bear to be lawfully registered by a hunter, the carcass must be presented whole and intact(minus guts)to a Dept Of Natural Resources Office.Game Wardens then remove a tooth and bone splinter for scientic study.Even with relative easy access to these roads a huge amount of work can still be required to haul 1000lbs of moose vension to the road edge for loading into a 1/2 ton(which is another challenge in its self).
Saying this, I dont support "highway hunters", though its not a major issue here.Where biggame numbers are high, the province has built "moose fencing" which is a 9' electric fence that runs for hundreds of miles on both sides of the roadway keeping animals off the highways, and well out of reach of road poachers

I grew up thinking roadside hunters were a little lower than sea sludge. My opinions have changed over the years. They do not have such an elevated status as to be what the sea sludge lands on. They are much lower than that, 4 to 5 layers lower. They have to use optics to look up to see the sea sludge.

To me it all depends on if your getting old and cant get up in to the unbeattin path. Where i live you cant shoot for or across a maintianed road. Plus they have this red dot green dot road system Eastern Washington. which is to but less stress on aminals. On the Westside almost all the roads are gated so you have to walk in. The game department has a program for disabled so they can get keys.

On maintained roads, it's illegal in a lot of places. If that's what you're talking about, I agree with Bo. Even where it's legal, I don't think it's right & I would never do it. Where they still do deer drives & dog hunting, they use the "roads." But those are usually not public roads & I don't think that's what you are talking about.

I will clarify for those who don't know what I mean by roadside hunter, an extreme lower life form.
They are people (Allegedly are people, I have seen some that weren't much more than the missing link) who cruise back roads looking for deer and other game. When they find something they stand in the road or sometimes walk into the field and shoot their target, without regard to who owns the land or if they have permission. They give real hunters a bad name. Can you tell I find them repugnant?

These are hunters that sit or stand on the side of the road with their muzzles facing oncoming traffic whil they are facing the other side of the road. I'd like your opinion on this. My opinion is it it's dangerous and should go back to an old law requiring them to be off the road 50 to 500 feet. But I'm asking for your opinion not mine. I think that they should have the common sense to not shoot towards the road. And they can see the road while standing 50 to 500 feet from it in an open field. We've all had to chose whether or not to take a shot at a deer. If it gets past you it should be let go if its headin towards the road. But I'm not askin my opinion Im askin yours.

Thank you for the comments I just wanted to see if I were alone in this.

In VA you can hunt along the roadside. The reason the law was changed apparently is the fact they didn't want guns being fired towards the road.
However There are some who of course abuse the system by standing on one side of the road and facing the opposite side ready to shoot. The roads I speak of are maintained and well traveled at times.

I see it as reckless and a law that shuld be repealled and the old law requiring them to be 50 feet to 500 feet from the road in order to discharge any weapon. I alos think the law should state they have to face the woodline away from the road.
