I generally start my search near where ever mayapples sprout.
The best place I look for them here in MT is about a month or two after a wild fire. Be careful, Bear eat them as do elk, elk will diminish the morels as soon as they grow so get in there fast.
Around dead standing elms usually on a hill thats gets alot of sun.
