Don't Make a Racket
The Mistake: "I'm gonna take you to a spot where I've been seeing a monster," a guide told me as we headed off for the woods. A hundred yards from the stand he loudly banged a chain on a metal gate as he fastened it. Then he pushed down a wire fence that made a sickly screech as we crossed over it.
"Uh, won't he hear us?" I asked.
"Nah, them bucks don't care about stuff like that," he replied with a straight face. We never saw a deer.
The Fix: An old buck puts up with a lot of sights and sounds, but if you step inside his core area and bang, clang or screech, he'll go on red alert. He may not blow out of the area, but he'll get wise and skirt your post. Always stay as quiet as you can.
