Don't Forget Safety
The Mistake: Alvin Halteman of Newville, Penn., was stalking along a hillside with an arrow nocked on his bow when he felt something squishy between his toes. He looked down and saw blood bubbling up through the top of his hunting boot. Somehow he'd plunged the arrow and broadhead deep into his foot as he was sneaking along and never felt it.
The Fix: Halteman limped a half mile to his home, where he passed out from blood loss. A family member quickly called 911 for help. Although Halteman lost nearly two pints of blood, he survived. "He also learned a big safety lesson," says his son Wayne.
Most people are pretty good about handling their guns safely, but you also need to be super careful with your arrows, broadheads, knives and the like. You can't afford one little slipup in the deer woods, especially one that could end your season or your life.
