Don't Let Up
The Mistake: Josh Durphy of Eldred, Penn., rattled up a buck and shot it with an arrow. After a long tracking job, he and his cousin found the deer and ran up to it with their knives drawn, backslapping and laughing. Suddenly the buck lunged up at them and blew away on a death run! The hunters leaped back as the deer plowed over their ATV and through a fence before finally expiring.
The Fix: A "dead" deer can hurt or kill you. Approach a fallen animal from behind with an arrow nocked or your gun ready. Watch for any sign of movement. Throw a rock on its back. Poke its rump, neck or eye to make sure it's dead.
