To Shoot Or Not?

By John B. Snow

Broadside, running uphill, quartering away...A buck can present any number of angles. Here's an illustrated guide on where to put the crosshairs.

Oct 2, 2007

Quartering Toward You

With any shot where the animal is standing at an angle to you, draw an imaginary line through its torso that bisects the vitals. In this case, position the crosshairs so that the bullet is on a path to exit at the rear of the ribcage on the deer's off side. Use that exit point as your aiming guide rather than the near side of the animal, as the position of the vitals might change in relation to the legs and chest as the deer moves.
