#1 Mountain Home, Arkansas

Big-fish diversity in a laid-back Ozarks valley

Leading Appeals: World-class fishing for trophy largemouth and striped bass, walleye, slab crappies and whopper trout in the White River and nearby Bull Shoals and Norfork lakes. Turkey, squirrels and whitetails- even timber ducks and black bear- occupy the Ozark National Forest

Population: 12,215

Median Home Price: $92,900

Amenities: Excellent hospitals and schools, low crime rate, vibrant retail economy and cohesive community make this a great place to raise children or retire.

Bottom Line: Few towns have this diversity of fishing or such close proximity to boat ramps and trailheads.

The first time Henry Seay fished northern Arkansas' White River Gorge he knew he'd buy a house nearby. That was seven years ago. Today the retiree from Phoenix owns a fish camp, Rim Shoals Resort, right on the bank of the trophy-trout stream. Seay still fishes the White River twice a week and adorns the walls of his business with evidence of his success, including mounts of brown trout pushing 30 inches.

Trout fishing in north-central Arkansas rivals any Rocky Mountain destination. The White, Buffalo, Little Red and North Fork rivers boast hundreds of trout per mile thanks to the coldwater habitat below the region's bottom-release dams. Mineral content in the water fuels growth rates. The Norfork River gave up a 38 1/2-pound brown trout two decades ago and the constellation of fly shops in the area are decorated with photos of 5- to 8-pound trout. Warmwater anglers have a playground west of town on Bull Shoals Lake, where walleye, bream, bass and crappie are caught in flooded timber and off rocky points. Norfork Lake's striped and hybrid bass reach 30 pounds of scrappy, reel-screaming action.

i have to comment on the rude things that were said about our area by some of the people posting comments here. this place is absolutely wonderful. i have lived in many states, traveled the us and abroad and this is one of the top notch places that i've ever been to. this area attracts quailty people and you must not be a quality person if you don't like it here, go back to the crime infested cities and the smog! you don't deserve to be in our piece of heaven anyway. it is so scenic here, the wildlife is abundant, fishing, hiking, etc., is just fantastic. as for the black bear comment, there are black bear here, as for fishing, we have huge tournaments here. give me a break!

i have been skiing the waters of bull shoals in the oakland. ar area for over twenty-five years. just a five hour drive from st. louis. sure beats the lake of the ozarks. the people in mt. home and area around the lake are friendly and helpful. they seem to always have time for the big city folks. good medical facilities, low taxes and now the big box stores are coming to the area. i'm sold on the lake, maybe now i should buy a fishing pole.

er, trout in buffalo river? only at bottom end at confluence of white river. but there's good smallmouth there for sure. flooded timber duck hunting, in ozarks? where? bears? few and far between. deer? fight the crowds and arkansas deer tend on the small side. bottom line, mountain home and area are best for trout, but they need to tighten up the rules so the meat-gatherers don't keep decimating the stock.

tax-happy school board. rising taxes like minnesota. visit, but don't move here. roads are like 1930's....no money for roads... they pour it into schools. typical okie thought process, bassawkward.

having lived in 10 states and traveled extensively to fish and hunt, i have to disagree with the mountain home selection. the trophy trout fishing is true. warmwater fishing is very difficult due to ultra clear water and no standing timber. trophy potential is only fair for most species. fishing access is great. hunting for deer and turkey is fair. trophy potential is marginal. access is good but competition is very stiff. come for the low taxes and friendly people, not for the fair overall fishing and hunting.

someone needs to do their homework better. mountain home is a great place to live, but there are many better places for hunting and fishing. the information about flooded timber is wrong, both lakes were cleared of most timber. the rest of the fishing is fair at best. you will never see a black bear and there are no timber ducks in this region and few waterfowl period. trophy potential for hunting is poor.

i came to mountain home for a 2 week visit...in 1998. haven't left since! even for non-sportpersons like myself, this is paradise. i've traveled the world, and i'd be hard pressed to find a prettier place with finer people. plus, my dad took me trout fishing years ago, and i, too, was hooked! (no pun intended!)

this is in response to randy's comments about mountain home. randy - try putting a hook on your line next time. i apologize for the sarcasm, but my experience on the norfork river has been great. i'd recommend joe salisbury if your interested in a guide - he is excellent.
