Whitetail Weather Forecast Nov. 30 - Dec. 5-0

    by

As we enter December strong storms sweep across the nation.  Gusty winds will accompany these fronts on both ends and some regions will see heavy rain (1-3inches).  In all areas hunting immediately after the winds subside will be a good bet.  Here are your regions:

NE – Heavy rain and wind on Wednesday will make the deer hole up.  On Thursday as it clears and the winds drop to 5-10 mph, movement will pick up dramatically.  Best days: Dec. 2 and Dec. 3.

    World Record Bear?-10

    by

The fact that black bears grow big in Pennsylvania is not news. Outdoor Life has been reporting on giant bear kills forever, but here's one that might take the grand prize according to our sources in the Keystone State. The bear and circumstances around its demise are currently being checked out by the Pennsylvania Game & Fish Department, but holy cow what a bruin....the Pocono Record reports...

    Gayne's Putin Man Crush Continues-8

    by

Man-Crush - When a straight man has a “crush” on another man, not sexual but kind of idolizing him.
    –Urban Dictionary

Despite the fact that neither Prime Minister Vladimir Putin nor his office has contacted me after several requests, my Putin man-crush continues to grow. This past week, his camp released several action shots of him in the rugged Russian backcountry that seem to solidify what the press has termed his “modern-day Marlboro man” image. The photos show Putin - dressed in full camo – exploring the backcountry on horseback, admiring a large trout he’s holding aloft, and navigating some difficult terrain with a scoped hunting rifle over his shoulder.

    Whitetail Weather Forecast Nov. 15-21-0

    by

This week looks to have most of the country locked in with below average temperatures.  This, along with solar activity starting on Friday and a full moon on Sunday, will make this a promising week for whitetail hunting.  Numerous systems will pass through North America bringing some great windows for rising and falling barometric pressure, which increases activity.  Here are your regions:

NE – The week starts out with pressure dropping as a low moves in and bottoms out on Wednesday.  A high will slowly build and take over by the early part of the weekend.  Best days: Nov. 18th, 19th and 20th.

    Master the Moon Phases-0

    by

We all understand that hunting or fishing near sunrise or sunset is almost always the most productive. Well, the same goes for the moon, along with its effects of overhead and underfoot periods. Just as the sun has its yearly cycle of 365 days, the moon has a yearly cycle as well, but in much less time of 29.5 days.

The effects the lunar cycle has on tides and weather is well documented, these effects carry over into wildlife movements as proven through record harvest studies.

    My Colorado Bull-2

    by

Think I’ve been snakebit by whopper whitetails this year? It’s been a similar story with big bull elk.

My elk season started in early September in northern Utah, where I passed up 18 smallish bulls, then panicked when I couldn’t even see a spike the last two days. Then it was off to the Wyoming Range in October, where I ended up letting the air out of a cow on the very last hour of the hunt.

Breaking News: PA Wildlife Officer Killed-7

    by

UPDATE: The suspected shooter in a murder of a Pennsylvania Wildlife Officer has been apprehended. The suspect, Christopher Johnson, has a laundry list of other convictions including burglary convictions and a 2005 guilty plea to a charge of fleeing an officer and endangering the welfare of children.

Police are on the lookout for a 27-year-old man suspected of shooting and killing a Pennsylvania Wildlife Officer last night about 10:30 local time in Adams County.

The Gettysburg Times reports that police are searching for Christopher Lynn Johnson, believed to have shot the game warden with a large-gauge shotgun after several shots were fired in Freedom Township last night. Johnson may be armed and should be considered dangerous, say police. He is believed to be driving a blue 1999 Chevrolet 4x4 extended-cab pickup with Pennsylvania plates YWC 7472.

The Old Man and the Moose-1

    by

Eighty-one-year-old attorney and former District Court Judge Jack Middleton is an experienced outdoorsmen.  He has been on three hunting trips to Africa, and with his son once undertook a journey across North America, on a mission to hunt every species of caribou from Newfoundland to Alaska. However, he has lived in New Hampshire for most of his adult life and despite entering the lottery every year for at least 20 years, had never won a moose permit.

This year he finally got lucky, not only drawing a moose tag, but getting one for the A-2 zone, far upstate, which he describes as the best-possible region.

His good fortune continued, and the moose he shot set a new state record for largest rack, measuring 68.5 inches across and narrowly beating the previous record of 68 inches.

    Going Gutless-10

    by

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has sent out this notice about how to gut an elk without opening up the carcass. This can be used for deer as well and is a great option for DIY backcountry hunters who don’t want to cart out bones.

The first time I saw this I was hunting with Andrew McKean in the River of No Return Wilderness in Idaho. I watched in amazement as Andrew stripped a nice 5-point whitetail buck to bare bones faster than a school of frenzied piranhas.

    Whitetail Weather Forecast Nov. 8-14-0

    by

Last week’s report showed some nice bucks taken on the second and third during perigee and moon equator crossing.  This week includes the date Nov. 11th, which is the number one day all-time according to Pope and Young records.

    Here’s your regions:

NE – High pressure and above normal temperatures will hamper activity in some areas. A slow moving low approaches by the weekend with falling pressure by Sunday making Saturday a good bet.  Best days - Nov. 12th and 13th.
