Whitetail Weather Forecast Dec. 27 - Jan. 2-0

    by

As we enter the last week of Whitetail Forecasts for 2010, we will see a diversity of hunting weather conditions.  In the NE, deer should be yarding up and staying close to food sources.  In the SE, record lows early in the week will stimulate post-rut movement.  In the deep  SW, we’ll see 70-degree highs hampering movement, while the midwest will be cool and dry until another blast of snow sweeps through later in the week.  Here’s your regions:

NE – As the major snowstorm lets up, temperatures will warm and pressure will rise.  There is a 3-day window before another front and more precipitation comes in on Saturday.  Best days: December 29th, 30th and 31st.

    Whitetail Weather Forecast Dec. 21-26-0

    by

Let it snow, let it snow! From west to east waves of precipitation will pound a good portion of the US this week.  Many areas will see deer congregate in winter yarding areas and holdup close to food sources. Breaks between systems should see late rut activity and feeding during daylight hours. This week also encompasses a full moon and lunar eclipse which will intensify activity, especially Monday thru Thursday. Here’s your regions:

NE – High pressure dominates the first few days and then drops through out the week with a bottom on Saturday.  The high Tuesday (1023) and Friday (1018) before a large Lp (1006) sets in are good bets.  Best days: December 21st and 24th

SE – Almost an identical pattern sets up for the SE this week.  HP after the lunar eclipse on Tuesday night should be an active time window.  Best days: December 21st and 26th

    Is den kill ethical?-22

    by

My moral compass is generally pretty rigid. I can’t say I see things in stark blacks and whites, but I have a pretty good idea of what constitutes appropriate behavior, whether it’s in my personal life or my observations of the larger world.

So I’m a little confused by my reaction to news that the pending Colorado state-record black bear was shot in its den. According to news accounts the hunter, Richard Kendall, tracked the massive bear to a cave, then crawled in the den and shot the bear. While I admire his nerve, my question is one that a lot of Coloradans are asking: Is it ethical to shoot a bear in its winter bed?

    The Bigfoot Hunt-6

    by

On December 14 Mineola, Texas Police Capt. Jack Newman responded to a trespassing call to find a man camped out in his car within the Mineola Nature Preserve along the Sabine River.

Ok, that doesn’t seem so odd.

When Newman asked the man why the hood of his vehicle was covered with nuts and pieces of steak and oranges, the man replied that he was trying to bait in a Bigfoot.

    Whitetail Weather Forecast Dec. 13-19-0

    by

Winter has been coming early to much of the USA. In between the numerous systems coming through, we should see active feeding and secondary rut action. Many areas will see windy conditions, and as they die down in your area midweek, deer will move. Also, keep track of your areas exact barometric cycles with OL Weather and hunt while pressure is rising and above 30.10. Here are your regions:

    These Coyotes Ain't F---ing Our Sheep-21

    by

At Outdoor Life we get all kinds of emails from our readers. Some are strange, some are heartfelt and some, like the one sent to us yesterday from Wyoming, are incredibly funny.

    Enjoy:

The Sierra Club and the U.S. Forest Service were presenting an alternative to the Wyoming ranchers for controlling the coyote population. It seems that after years of the ranchers using the tried and true method of shooting or trapping the predators, the Sierra Club had a "more humane" solution to this issue.

Battle of the New Jersey Black Bears-2

    by

The bear population in New Jersey has been steadily increasing over the past few years, and the influx of bruins has caused residents headaches. Garbage cans have been raided, pets have been eaten, and suburbanites who are not use to seeing black bears have been worried.

So this year, the Garden State opened it's first bear hunting season in five years. The state organized a six-day season that ends Saturday, and so far hunters have killed 441 bears. They're right on track to hit their management goal of 500-700 harvested bears … and everybody lived happily ever after right?

Well not exactly. The hunt has been highly controversial and has drawn heavy criticism from animal rights groups all over the East Coast.

    Whitetail Weather Forecast Dec. 7-12-0

    by

We enter the second week of December with most of the nation dealing with wind, snow and below average temperatures. The secondary rut kicks in the north as the primary rut will be going on in the southern states. Finding the hunting window between storms and as pressure rises above 30.10 is key.  Here are your regions:

NE – Strong winds Tuesday and Wednesday and low barometric pressure will give way to drying conditions and rising pressure on Thursday. Saturday is also a good window between fronts. Best days: December 9th and 11th.

New Stiletto Sandals Mark The End Of Times -7

    by

Yes. These are the end times.

This week Teva, makers of some of the best sandals on Earth, partnered with New York clothing company Grey Ant to create high heeled sandals. Sporting a 4-inch stiletto and Velcro straps, Teva states that these new Chic Sandals are "the most comfortable performance high heel on the planet." Which leads me to ask, “Just how many performance high heels are there on the planet?” I’ve never heard of such a thing. And I get around.
