    Gayne's Dove Contest Winner-6

    by

Before announcing the winner of the “Name the four species of dove that may legally hunted in Texas” contest I’d like to thank all the participants.  I’d especially like to thank Sainte_Terrer for not only being the first person to enter but the one that everyone else copied from.  Of course the correct answer was white-winged, mourning, white-tipped, and Eurasian collared with the latter being unprotected and not subject to a season.

Other dove species that reside in Texas are the red-billed pigeon, Inca dove, ground dove, and band-tailed pigeon. The birds are protected and may not be hunted. Not that you’d want to, I mean have you ever tasted a band-tailed pigeon? Trust me. It doesn’t taste like chicken.

Gayne Has Putin On His List-11

    by

Back in December I wrote “start hanging out with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin” on my list of New Year’s Resolutions. I did so because he has a fondness for beer, enjoys watching fights and gets to hunt endangered species with a tranquilizer gun.

I’m sure him engaging in the latter has to do with his political clout and not with the fact that he’s so cool he responds to wimpy reporters who ask about his outdoor endeavors by saying, “Living in general is dangerous.”

You tell ‘em Putin.  If he gives you anymore lip ship him to a gulag!

    Welcome to the Jungle-16

    by

    Netflix lied to me again.

The online DVD rental service emailed me that based on my past rentals it was sure I’d enjoy Welcome to the Jungle. I didn’t. It was horrible.

The story centers on two couples that venture into the rainforests of Irian Jaya in search of an elderly Michael Rockefeller who vanished there in 1961. In addition to the story, horrible dialogue, little to no action and shaky Blair Witch camera effects the movie – like many movies – shows no realism or understanding of venturing outdoors.

    Lead Ban Proposed-8

    by

It’s official. The federal government has been asked to ban lead ammunition.

An alliance of radical environmental groups has petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency to “ban the manufacture, processing and distribution” of lead shot, bullets and fishing sinkers nationwide. You can read the petition, filed earlier this month here.

    Hunters Don't Shoot Eagles-13

    by

I took my family to the Houston Zoo last week and aside from the fact that almost every animal on display was labeled as “endangered” (alligators, lions, eland, bongo - all legally hunted in their native habitat yet categorized as endangered by the zoo) I found the facility pretty nice. That was until I came across Liberty the bald eagle.  Liberty is a rescued bird that came to the zoo in January of 2000 after being shot in the wing by a “hunter.”

    Really?  A “hunter.”

    Name Gayne's Dove - Win a Ton of Stuff!-23

    by

Ton in the figurative sense that is.

Dove season is less than a month away here in Texas and you know what that means…that’s right, a firm dressing down from your father-in-law on how you can’t shoot to hit spit, don’t know how to dress out your birds properly, and snarky comments about writing for “that internet thing.”

    What? That’s just me? Huh…interesting.

    Find the Snake Winner Is...-13

    by

Of the 65 people that entered my “Find The Snake Contest” only three would exit the jungle with their life.  im4hunting, oklahoma, and leotrainer all found the snake’s head smack dab in the middle of D5.  The rest of the entries would have been bitten.  This would have led to swelling, pain, and shock.  Before slipping into unconsciousness the victim would become incontinent, his eyelids and tongue would swell, and the skin around the bite would blister. Blood would appear in the urine stream as well as in vomit. Personally I can’t think of a nastier way to go.
