Did Warm Weather Ruin Your Waterfowl Season?-6

    by

You don't need an "Al Gore For President" sticker on the bumper of your Honda Prius to notice that it has been unseasonably warm this winter. And this long stretch of warm weather has thrown a monkey wrench in waterfowl seasons across the country.

Most ducks and geese only migrate as far as they have to. Once they find open water, food and safety, they stop heading south. Warm weather typically means more open water and a shorter or delayed trip.

    Winter's Wrath-3

    by

You could sense a tipping point last week. Our grinding winter weather — which has been intensifying since mid December — is finally taking its toll on critters, especially those whitetail bucks that entered the winter run down and ragged from the rut.

Since the week before Thanksgiving, we’ve been above freezing only three times, and our low temperatures during December averaged just above zero here in Montana. We have already experienced some 30-below mornings, bitter cold that we don’t expect until February most years.

Whitetail Weather Forecast Dec. 27 - Jan. 2-0

    by

As we enter the last week of Whitetail Forecasts for 2010, we will see a diversity of hunting weather conditions.  In the NE, deer should be yarding up and staying close to food sources.  In the SE, record lows early in the week will stimulate post-rut movement.  In the deep  SW, we’ll see 70-degree highs hampering movement, while the midwest will be cool and dry until another blast of snow sweeps through later in the week.  Here’s your regions:

NE – As the major snowstorm lets up, temperatures will warm and pressure will rise.  There is a 3-day window before another front and more precipitation comes in on Saturday.  Best days: December 29th, 30th and 31st.

    Whitetail Weather Forecast Dec. 13-19-0

    by

Winter has been coming early to much of the USA. In between the numerous systems coming through, we should see active feeding and secondary rut action. Many areas will see windy conditions, and as they die down in your area midweek, deer will move. Also, keep track of your areas exact barometric cycles with OL Weather and hunt while pressure is rising and above 30.10. Here are your regions:

    Whitetail Weather Forecast Dec. 7-12-0

    by

We enter the second week of December with most of the nation dealing with wind, snow and below average temperatures. The secondary rut kicks in the north as the primary rut will be going on in the southern states. Finding the hunting window between storms and as pressure rises above 30.10 is key.  Here are your regions:

NE – Strong winds Tuesday and Wednesday and low barometric pressure will give way to drying conditions and rising pressure on Thursday. Saturday is also a good window between fronts. Best days: December 9th and 11th.

    Whitetail Weather Forecast Nov. 15-21-0

    by

This week looks to have most of the country locked in with below average temperatures.  This, along with solar activity starting on Friday and a full moon on Sunday, will make this a promising week for whitetail hunting.  Numerous systems will pass through North America bringing some great windows for rising and falling barometric pressure, which increases activity.  Here are your regions:

NE – The week starts out with pressure dropping as a low moves in and bottoms out on Wednesday.  A high will slowly build and take over by the early part of the weekend.  Best days: Nov. 18th, 19th and 20th.

    Master the Moon Phases-0

    by

We all understand that hunting or fishing near sunrise or sunset is almost always the most productive. Well, the same goes for the moon, along with its effects of overhead and underfoot periods. Just as the sun has its yearly cycle of 365 days, the moon has a yearly cycle as well, but in much less time of 29.5 days.

The effects the lunar cycle has on tides and weather is well documented, these effects carry over into wildlife movements as proven through record harvest studies.

    Whitetail Weather Forecast Nov. 8-14-0

    by

Last week’s report showed some nice bucks taken on the second and third during perigee and moon equator crossing.  This week includes the date Nov. 11th, which is the number one day all-time according to Pope and Young records.

    Here’s your regions:

NE – High pressure and above normal temperatures will hamper activity in some areas. A slow moving low approaches by the weekend with falling pressure by Sunday making Saturday a good bet.  Best days - Nov. 12th and 13th.

    Wind Speed and Buck Movement-0

    by

Last week's field logs for Outdoor Life showed an increase in overall buck sightings, up about 14 percent. Using only wind speed criteria, we had more bucks sighted than does in a 7-10 mph wind then in a calm 0-6 mph wind.

    What does this tell us?

Bucks feel more comfortable traveling with a distinct breeze. There are always many other factors involved, but this is what the record books show also.

    Two for Two in Colorado-4

    by

After having punched my antelope tag on Monday, and a rather slow day yesterday here at Elkhorn Outfitters, Under Amour’s Pete Angle and I saddled up and headed to the high country today in search of trophy mule deer.

We got a brief snow squall Monday, and temperatures dropped into the 20s yesterday. This cold snap (temps were in the 50s here in Craig, Colorado, last week) has seemed to give the mule deer rut a bit of a kick-start. We’ve been seeing a lot of bucks cruising solo, and the necks of a couple bucks killed yesterday by other hunters in camp showed some considerable swelling.
