Gun Buyback Programs Grow in Popularity After Sandy Hook Shooting-6

    by

A 2004 National Academies of Sciences study called firearms buyback programs a "flawed and fruitless exercise" that serve as  "more political theater than effective policy" in addressing gun violence.

“The guns typically surrendered in gun buybacks are those that are least likely to be used in criminal activities,” the study says. “Old, malfunctioning guns whose resale value is less than the reward offered in buy-back programs or guns owned by individuals who derive little value from the possession of guns (e.g. those who have inherited guns).”

Yet, a number of record-setting gun buyback programs have been staged across the country since the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Toy Gun ‘Ban’ Re-Launched In California-4

    by

Peace activist Jerry Rubin has re-launched his "No Toy Guns Merit Award Project" that offers a “personalized merit award” to all the children and families that write a letter explaining, “Why I will not buy toy guns for my children” or for children, “Why I do not like to play with toy guns.”

As reported on Fox News on Dec. 27, the anti-toy guns project was first established by Rubin and the "Alliance for Survival" peace group in California in 1987. Rubin decided to re-launch the toy gun removal program after the Dec. 14 shootings at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Local Newspapers Publish Handgun Owners' Names and Addresses-5

    by

What news value is there in publishing the names of thousands of residents with handgun permits on an interactive map that pinpoints their addresses?

Second Amendment advocates should prepare for the day when they have to ask their local news editors that very question because media outlets are going to be pressured to publish names and addresses of local handgun owners after a suburban New York city newspaper did so over the weekend, spurring applause and outrage nationwide.

Guns Sales Surge with New Legislation on the Horizon-3

    by

Stores from Colorado to San Diego, and Cincinnati to Connecticut have reported a surge in gun sales as gun-control legislation looms on the horizon. The surge has come mostly from .223 ammunition, AR-15s, and the type of high-capacity magazines covered under the expired federal assault weapons ban which Congress will consider renewing in 2013.

“It’s absolutely ridiculous how many people are buying guns,” said Tim McFarland, an employee at K-5 Arms Exchange, less than 25 miles from Newtown, in a Dec. 20 story in The Daily Beast Dec. 20. "Customers have been packing the store since the weekend. It’s just astronomical. We sold out of assault rifles yesterday.”

The NRA Speaks Up: Put Armed Guards in Every School-10

    by

The NRA broke its silence on the mass-shooting that took place in Newtown, Conn., during a news conference today. Much of the statement made by Wayne LaPierre, NRA CEO, was devoted to making the argument that placing armed guards in every school should be our priority as a nation in order to protect our children from those who would harm them.

“It is now time for us to assume responsibility for their safety at school. The only way to stop a monster from killing our kids is to be personally involved and invested in a plan of absolute protection. The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” LaPierre said.

Joe Biden Gun Panel: Will Second Amendment Advocates Get a Seat at the Table?-5

    by

Vice-President Joe Biden will spearhead an Obama Administration task force that will explore ways to improve mental health resources, address ways to create a culture that doesn't promote violence and present a set of recommendations on gun laws by January.

President Barack Obama announced the creation of the informal panel during a Dec. 19 press conference, challenging the idea that the Second Amendment right to own a gun means the right to own any gun.

What's In Store For Freedom Group-1

    by

One of the repercussions of the shootings in Newtown was the announcement by Cerebus Capital Management that it was going to “immediately” start the process of selling off its investment in Freedom Group. Freedom Group, in case you didn’t know, is the company that owns firearms makers Remington, Bushmaster, DPMS, Marlin, H&R, Para, Dakota Arms and The Parker Gun, as well as Barnes Bullets, Advanced Armament Corp. and other firms in the outdoor industry.

These holdings represent a small part of the assets of Cerebus, which has over $20 billion under its management. To put that in context, the net sales of the Freedom Group companies for the first nine months of 2012 was $677.3 million.

    The Sandy Hook Shootings-4

    by

The tragedy of last week’s mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, has rocked the entire nation to the core. Mere words seem inadequate at a time like this to express the sorrow and horror we all feel after the slaying of so many innocent people.

As the President said, our hearts are indeed broken for the lives that were cut short. And at the same time our hearts go out to the families of those who were slain, and to that entire community.

We’re all affected by this tragedy in unique and individual ways—while at the same time we are united in our grief. Like so many other parents, I thought about my children and their classmates who were in school that day, engaged in the simple but hard work of growing their minds and bodies to prepare for their futures, futures that we as parents pray will allow them to live out fulfilling and happy lives. The notion that some evil might befall them in that sanctuary, and deny them that basic right, is beyond reason and beyond understanding and makes the loss of those young lives at Sandy Hook Elementary all the more difficult to comprehend.

Court to Illinois: End Un-Constitutional Gun Ban in 180 Days-5

    by

By June 2013, lawful citizens in Chicago -- the site of 2,364 shootings and 487 homicides in 2012 through early December -- will be able to exercise a Constitutionally guaranteed individual right and carry concealed weapons in public for defense, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Dec. 11.

In the 2-to-1 ruling, the Court struck down an Illinois law banning residents from carrying handguns in public, calling the restriction "arbitrary" and "unconstitutional."

The ruling effectively ends Illinois' one-year reign as the only state to not recognize the Second Amendment. Illinois earned the honor after Wisconsin lawmakers tossed out its ban on concealed carry last year.

    Why Sound Suppressors Matter-5

    by

At the latest count, 39 states allow civilians to own suppressors. If you live in one of these silencer-friendly states and haven’t purchased a suppressor, you need to put one on your Christmas list.

The advantages of suppressors are numerous. They not only protect your hearing but make shooting with a group of people much safer and improve marksmanship by reducing flinching.
