Several bloggers on Outdoorlife.com have weighed in over the past week or so with their New Year’s resolutions. And what noble declarations they have been.
Dear friend and OL Hunting Editor Andrew McKean vowed to befriend a new hunter, better respect whitetail deer and invest in habitat among other splendid ideas.

As a native of South Dakota I’m always interested in stories about my home state and this photo piqued my interest. This heavy duty, replacement bumper-style buck was shot in the Black Hills, the very mountain chain where I first was able to legally tote a rifle for whitetails.

There’s no doubt that you can find big bucks in New England, particularly in the far northern state of Maine, but New England native Jeff Lewis still likes to leave the northland outpost and travel to the Midwest each fall to pursue trophy whitetails. Lewis realizes his hunting style for Maine whitetails is somewhat different than the stand-type hunting most Midwestern hunters utilize. In the north, Lewis has nearly 30 years of hunting experience that centers on tracking bucks of the big woods with only the occasional stand setup when conditions warrant.

Outdoor Life Senior Editor John Taranto snapped this photo of a flier taped to the window of a Grants, New Mexico, restaurant. It speaks for itself. You can help make an American soldier's Christmas.

It may not be Rudolph with his “nose so bright,” but a wayward muley buck in the Colorado Springs, Colo., area is certainly doing what he can to brighten things up this holiday season. The mule deer has been spotted on several occasions around a local neighborhood after it apparently got tangled in somebody’s Christmas lights. The string of lights are wrapped around his antlers and hanging down around his head as you can see from the photo supplied from our friend, J.R. Absher, at outdoorpressroom.com.

The other day, I blogged about some of the worse-than-forecasted deer harvests in the Northeast and the upper Midwest. Mike from Michigan wondered aloud whether the economy might have resulted in a higher incidence of poaching.
"What is around, more than normal, are hungry, out of work people," he posted. "Could some of the deer harvest have gone unreported and out of season?"

On November 21st, 11-year old Tristan Greene couldn’t wait to hit the woods for the Ohio youth deer season in Clermont County. The boy and his father were hunting a patch of woods directly behind their home where the two had been seeing several nice bucks. During the first morning, a little frustration began to set in when the pair failed to see a single deer. Tristan and his father decided to leave the stand for a quick lunch and head back to the woods for an evening hunt. Finally, nearly an hour later, a slick headed doe stepped into the field about 85 yards from their double stand setup. Tristan took a deep breath and tried to steady his Remington 20-guage shotgun for the shot. His father eagerly watched as the slug kicked up dirt just under the doe’s belly.

December 6, 2009 by Hey? We're deer hunters and by nature are prone to bitching and moaning about weather conditions, our state's fish and game department, ridiculous new regulations and on and on. But what's going on in the deer woods this season may go beyond simple grousing.
Many seasons in many states are still underway, but preliminary numbers already point to some startlingly dismal deer harvest numbers that seem to be more than simple weather or food-source-related anomalies. And I know, cause I've been there.

After more than 30 days of chasing whitetails across the heart of the country, I swung back home for a break before I wrap up my season with a late-season Iowa muzzleloader hunt in early January. I’m wading through stacks of E-mails and have some good bucks to share with you, but for now I wanted to share my best buck for the fall.

December 1, 2009 by An unlikely ally in the effort to offset the costs incurred by hunters attempting to donate venison to food pantries in New York has emerged in the form of one Sen. Charles Schumer! That’s right, ol’ Sen. Chuck, the antithesis to all the NRA stands for and one of its most vocal critics since entering public office decades ago, has stepped up to help his state’s hunters and its masses of hungry with a recent proposal.
