California Man Loses Leg After Shooting Self During Bear Attack-4

Somewhere, Dirty Harry is shaking his head in disbelief. An unidentified California hunter lost his leg Saturday when he accidentally shot himself.

The man was bear hunting with friends when the group treed a black bear.  When someone shot at the bear, it dropped from the branches above and charged the man. He drew his .44 handgun a little too erratically and blew a hole through his leg somewhere below his knee. Another hunter shot the bear and killed it.

Saskatchewan Conducts Feral Pig Survey, Hopes to Stop Invasion-4

Ryan Brook fears Saskatchewan could go the way of Texas. No, not a land of history, cultural, entertainment, and the birthplace of Outdoor Life correspondent Gayne C. Young…

But a land plagued by the destructive force known as feral hogs.

The most recent estimates put the Lone Star State as home to more than 2 million wild pigs. Brook, a University of Saskatchewan researcher, believes that the Canadian prairie province easily has the potential to become just as infected if action isn’t taken soon. He is compiling data for Saskatchewan’s first scientific survey of feral pigs. "I think the window is closing very rapidly," Brook told the Canadian Press. "If we don't take some very serious action over the next two years, then we're very quickly going to be moving into a position where we're simply trying to manage and live with wild boar, rather than eradicate them."

NJ Man Charged With Smuggling Whale Tusks-1

A New Jersey man was arrested last week allegedly smuggling and attempting to sell…wait for it…whale tusks.

    Yep. Whale tusks.

Officials with the federal Environment and Natural Resources Division arrested Andrew L Zarauskas at his home in Union, NJ, on Friday for illegally bringing narwhal tusks into the U.S. from Canada. (Am I the only one that didn’t know there was such an agency? I thought Customs or U.S. Fish and Wildlife handled whale smuggling.) Zarauskas faces charges of conspiracy and money laundering for his dealing with whale ivory.

Surf Fisherman Catches Delaware State Record Striped Bass-0

Delaware has a new state record striped bass: A 52-pound fish landed by Ben Smith on Dec. 8.

Smith, from Bryn Mawr, Pa., was surf fishing at the Delaware Seashore State Park. The striper measured 51 inches long (yeah, that's over 4 feet), with a girth of 30 inches. The fish was weighed on certified scale at the Old Inlet Bait & Tackle in Rehoboth Beach and then verified by DNREC’s Division of Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Section Sr. Cpl. Douglas Messeck.

Grizzly Bear Hunting Proposal Considered in the Lower 48-5

The Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee, a group that includes representatives of five federal agencies, four states and the Canadian government, announced last week Thursday that they have decided upon a plan that would allow grizzles to be hunted in Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho once they are removed from the threatened list.

There are about 600 grizzles in and around Yellowstone National Park come and roughly 1,000 grizzlies in an area centered on Glacier National Park. Regulated hunting could begin in the next few years. The IGBC said that hunting would minimize conflicts between bears and humans, mainly ranchers whose stock has taken a hit in recent years.

An unidentified idiot was videotaped “riding” a sperm whale off Pompanio Beach, Florida on Sunday.

Fantasy Gift Guide: 5 Christmas Presents that are Way Too Expensive-4

    Dear Santa,

I hope this letter finds you well and your reindeer still bullet and arrow free. (Seriously, how has no one taken out Rudolph yet? I mean he carries around a spotlight that all but targets him in early morning and late afternoon and begs to be made the focus of one heck of a taxidermy mount!)

This year I’ve limited my wish list to five major items and while they total a little over half a million dollars, I think we’d both agree that I’ve been exceptionally good this year.

Just in case you missed it…

A Utah sheriff managed to free a bull moose tangled in a backyard swing set in Ogden, Utah this August, and a bystander caught the rescue on video.

Sgt. Lane Findlay gave his cell phone to an onlooker and asked him to record the rescue attempt, reports ABC News. Just as the footage begins to roll, you can hear him say, "In case I die, give this to my wife."

London Bar Busted for Serving "Moby Dick" Whale Cocktail-5

A bar in East London is in quite a bit of trouble – and has garnished quite a bit of publicity – for serving a drink flavored with whale meat. Take a moment to allow that to sink in … the idea of the drink, not the actual drink itself.

Police raided the Nightjar bar on December 3 after being tipped off in mid-October that the popular pub which bills itself as “a hidden slice of old-school glamour” was serving a drink called the Moby Dick that was advertised as containing “whale skin infusion.”  While the species of whale the skin came from is unknown, the other ingredients in the $27 drink were Laphroaig whisky, Drambuie, ale, and bitters.
