How to Fish for Bass Like a Pro: Determine Fishing Conditions-0

Last summer I got the chance to fish with Kevin VanDam "the Michael Jordan of Bass Fishing" in Upstate New York. If you hang out with VanDam for about an hour you'll find that one of his favorite phrases is: "Lemme break it down for you." Luckily, KVD was kind enough to breakdown a few of the keys to his success as a bass fisherman in a short series of videos we'll post here on the fishing blog.

11 Best New Bass Lures from 2013 Bassmaster Expo-1

The Bassmaster Classic Expo is something of a deep, dark secret among veteran bass anglers. While much of the fishing industry prepares to unveil their new innovations at the ICAST show scheduled to take place in Las Vegas in July, the real sneak peek happens at the Classic Expo. To that end, Outdoor Life meandered through the Expo aisles to find some of the new great tackle that your fishing buddies won’t hear about for a few weeks.

Bonefish Hot Spot: Chasing Bones in the Bahamas -0

I was fishing in paradise, and, damn, if Rick Ankiel hadn’t gotten into my head. As you may recall, Ankiel was arguably the most impressive Major League pitcher in 2000. However, when he was given the ball in Game 1 of the National League Division Series that year, he launched five of the craziest wild pitches you’ll ever see in your lifetime, walked the bases loaded, and generally couldn’t find the batter’s box, let alone the strike zone. Then he became an outfielder.

Fishing Tips: Tweak Your Jigs to Catch Big Bass-0

During his years as a Bassmaster Elite Series pro, legendary angler Denny Brauer cashed in with Strike King jigs. Presentation is certainly essential, but so is preparation. Still active in regional competitions, the recently retired Missouri angler sat down and showed us his start-to-finish process for preparing his Premier Pro Model jigs. The logic behind this system will serve most any tackle selection.

Feeding Frenzy Video: Insane Tuna and Dolphin Action Off Panama Coast-0

This video was shot off the coast of … PANAMA! (thanks Van Halen). @TackleGrab tweeted it on our page and it's just too good not to share. Just when the video starts to get a little repetitive, one of the anglers decides to jump in the water and shoot underwater footage of the feeding frenzy. See if you're quick enough to spot the shark cruise across the frame.

UK Angler Lands 1,320-Pound Marlin, One of Largest All Time-1

    Talk about beginner’s luck!

Kevin Gardner’s first blue marlin is one of the largest ever pulled from the sea, weighing an incredible 1,320 pounds.

The United Kingdom angler was trolling off Ascension Island in the South Atlantic Ocean on Monday afternoon when the leviathan hit. Harmattan skipper Olaf Grimkowski detailed the event later on his Facebook page.  "In the distance, we saw her lunging and she looked promising," Olaf wrote. "After three surface runs she went a bit deeper and for the last 90 minutes Kevin fought her [into the] sunset."  All told the fish fought for more than three hours before wireman Emil Ruud was able to bring the blue in close enough to gaff.

    Cliff Pace Wins Bassmaster Classic-1

In a tournament dominated by moving baits, Cliff Pace, of Petal, Miss. spent much of his time meticulously picking apart rocky bottom with a football jig and completed a wire-to-wire victory at the Bassmaster Classic on Oklahoma's Grand Lake O' the Cherokees. Technically, Pace shared the Day 1 lead with 2003 Classic champ Mike Iaconelli, but he'd break away on Day 2 with a 7-pound lead and seal the deal in the final round with a 3-day total of 54 pounds, 12 ounces and winning margin of 3-4.

How To Dial In a Late-Winter Bass Hotspot-0

With approximately 46,500 surface acres, Oklahoma's Grand Lake offered plenty of area for the Bassmaster Classic's 53-boat field to spread out and fish. The challenge, though, was finding those key spots that held quality and quantity. Here's what the top finishers looked for:

    Memories of John Merwin-0

On February 20, a hard, cold day in New England, the world lost one of the most widely read and finest angling writers of our times, and I lost a dear friend.  John Merwin of Dorset, VT and regular habitué of the best fishing waters around the globe, was 67.

Merwin was the author of more than a dozen books including the encyclopedic “The New American Trout Fishing,” and contributor to many more. He was the editor of Fly Fisherman magazine for some years, founding publisher of Fly Rod & Reel magazine and the trade mag Fly-Tackle Dealer. He served a hitch as The American Museum of Fly Fishing’s Executive Director in the mid ‘80s.
