Opening Day is Here - 5
by Gerry Bethge
Pretty much the perfect morning for an Opening Day of deer season here in western New York, though a little snow wouldn't have hurt my feelings any—cloudy with temps in the mid-40s. Shooting thus far has been sporadic. As for myself and my hunting party of six? I saw 4 does and a spindly 4-pointer and wound up being high man for the morning. It's noon on Saturday as I write this. Back to the stand. Tragically, we just received word from friends back in the Catskills that a fellow hunter fell while putting up a stand late yesterday afternoon and died. We are all greatly saddened by the loss and serves as a reminder to everyone to please practice proper safety and wear a harness when climbing into your stand. More reports as warranted. |

opening day here monday.sorry about the loss of your friend.
sorry about the loss. Saftey first but sometimes no matter how safe you try to be something still happens thats just part of hunting. We hurt sprain break freez just to do what we love to do we face death daily out there we dont want to think about but its there all around us. Thats why Im so thankful for evrey moment out there any breath could be my last and i accept that. Things that should first be taught to knew hunters is saftey and to be pre paird for a injury when out in the woods.
Sorry to hear about your fellow hunter. A local man fell and died hanging a stand about two weeks ago. Personally I know of a broken neck, back and a serious hanging from a step in this area, all people known to me. We can never be too safe, don't ever be complacent about safety. Never take short cuts even when it seems to be the easiest quickest thing to do. I know I have been guilty of taking the easy quick way instead of the right way. I have been very lucky and had a close call or two. But just think how much your life can be changed, or ended by an accident, or what a devastating effect it can have on your friends and family. No amount of quick and easy can ever make up for one careless instant. Please be careful and be safe.
never have been good at stand hunting. not afraid of hieghts, just afrid of falling. sorry to hear about another lost hunter.
yes we all read these tragic stories but some of US believe it can't happen to us . I was one of these untill I fell , (no permanent harm done)but an uneccesary lesson w hen i already knew better . So if not for you're self but at least ur family .wear the harness /it may and sooner or later will happen to you .
