Heatwave Causes Massive Fish Kills Across the Country - 0

The heatwave that heat wave that finally seems to be breaking caused massive fish kills in lakes and rivers across the country.

Scorching weather brings higher water temperatures which means less dissolved oxygen (cold water holds more oxygen than warm water does because molecules move more slowly in cold water allowing extra room for oxygen).

According to MSNBC.com: 6,000 gizzard shad died in a Delaware lake,  500 fish died in South Carolina's Lake Hartwell, fishermen have reported thousands of dead fish across South Dakota, 10,000 bluegills died in Butterfly Lake in Tennessee.

"It's really putrid," Paula Gumpman, president of the local neighborhood association, told the Knoxville News Sentinel. "It's like after a hurricane. Gooky and yucky."

What's the weather been like for you this summer? How are your local lakes and rivers holding up?
