This is the image that graced the front of the New York Post today. I have no problem with cops getting their hands on fun toys. This guy is toting an M-4 with a Surefire weapon light and it looks like it is topped off with an Aimpoint sight.
But is this for show or go? The cops deployed en mass today in New York’s transit system following the bombings that occurred in Moscow Monday. While I understand the reason for the show of force—the city has to look like it is doing something, after all—I question whether it is much an actual deterrent or just a psychological crutch.
An even bigger question is, do the cops have the training to match the toys? I wish I could say “yes” with confidence—but I don’t.

NO JOKE TEXAN!
These movie goers who watch this stuff on the big screen really get a dose of reality when it's up close, in your face and personal!
The guy in the red looks extremely nervous as if he's never seen a gun in his life.
You don't think they are actually pest exterminators posing as Law Enforcement trying to protect the people from those mutant rats and gators in the subway?
Mike, the sight of uniformed and armed personnel actually deter a suicide bomber? Don't know any statistics on it, but I'm sure it makes them think twice! what do you think?
About time they got some firepower! Darn, carrying a 12ga with #4 buckshot really sucks when the bad guys get to carry the real stuff that doesn't just ping off trash cans made by Rubber Maid!
im sure they dont have proper training for those guns
This is NY, where guns are outlawed. I hope this isn't a depressing look into the future--heavily armed police protecting ??? who?, themselves?, from the "unarmed" citizens. My brain hurts.
I think people freak out when they see something that looks like a m-4. They think fully-automatic,sub-guns, that spray bullets. I think of a sweet gun that looks cool. but i know its not fully automatic i know its not a bullet spraying sub-gun
Does the sight of uniformed and armed personnel actually deter a suicide bomber? Or is it just the opposite?
police are trained better now because of the technology than say twenty years ago.swat teams and police forces train together because they work together all of the time.training is not the problem i think the use of their power is more of a concern!
"transport port" lol
here I thought it was a prisoner transport port bus. cops have the right to have cool guns to :-)
