Study: Wolves Helping to Increase Yellowstone Grizzly Population-1

    by

There's no doubt that wolves have a large impact on any habitat they are introduced into. But, oftentimes the exact effects topline predators have on the flora and fauna aren't fully understood.

A new study published in the Journal of Animal Ecology looks to shed a little more light on some of those interactions. Researchers from Oregon State University and Washington State University found that reintroduced wolf packs are actually helping Yellowstone grizzlies. By preying on elk herds, the wolves are incidentally decreasing grazing pressure on the park's berry bushes, one of the grizzlies' favorite food sources.

    by

Bears exhibit all sorts of unique behavior, but usually no one is around to see it.  In this case, there was a trail camera on the scene to capture images of a variety of bears using a single pine as a rubbing tree. Sped up of course, it looks like the bruins are 'pole dancing.'

Video: Divers Almost Eaten by Humpback Whales-0

    by

We've posted some crazy whale videos on the Newshound blog before, but usually those videos involve the aggressive killer whale, not the more docile humpback. These divers almost went the way of Jonah when two humpbacks busted the surface going after baitfish. According to the video, which was published July 20, the divers were near Souza Rock off the coast of Central California.

You can't blame the whales for this one.

Lawsuit Filed in Pennsylvania to Repeal Sunday Hunting Ban-22

    by

This past week marked another step in the a long battle for Pennslyvanians wishing to hunt on Sundays.

Hunters United for Sunday Hunting filed a lawsuit in Middle District federal court in Harrisburg seeking to have the state's prohibition against hunting on Sundays lifted. It claims the ban is unconstitutional under the First, Second and 14th amendments, TribLIVE reports.

Attorney Peter Russo claims the ban creates separate classes of citizens who are treated unequally. Russo also wrote that the “blue law” — designed to enforce religious standards — no longer makes sense when people can gamble, buy alcohol, and shop on Sunday.

Tuna Capsizes Boat in Hawaii, Almost Drowns Angler -0

    by

Fish catches man. An ode to Captain Ahab. A 230-pound Ahi tuna capsized a boat and nearly drowned the angler who had him on the line.

Anthony Wichman, the 54-year-old Koloa, Hawaii native, was 10 miles southwest of Port Allen, Kauai Friday morning when things went horribly wrong.

"He gaffed it once in the back and once in the eye and that caused the fish to take a final dive and he drove straight down. The line wrapped around my dad’s ankle and pulled him overboard," Anuhea Wichman, Anthony's daughter, told KOHN.

Tom Varney: Australia's Wild Dog Hunter-2

    by

Australia's wild dogs make our coyotes look like pesky little ankle biters. Dingos and wild dog hybrids caused $67 million in livestock damage in 2009 and now the canines are making headlines by moving in closer to the suburbs.

"Just in Brisbane, in the southern suburb of Logan, we've heard of dog numbers increasing and starting to have an impact on households, attacking domestic pets and dogs," AgForce spokesman Michael Allpass told ABCnews.com. The problem has gotten so bad that officials warn visiting tourists about potential wild dog attacks.

Wildlife officers, hunters, and farmers across Queensland have done their best to cull the dogs, but perhaps none have put up a better effort than Tom Varney. With a predator call and a .223, Varney killed thousands of dogs in the 90s and early 2000s. For 15 years he hunted wild dogs everyday. Eventually, he made a set of DVDs about wild dog hunting. Check out the clip below. If you can ignore the old-school graphics, you'll get to see some sweet predator calling.
