Tiger Trout

. Uploaded on May 30, 2009

Brook Trout + Brown Trout = Tiger? Tiger Trout that is of course. A rising increase in popularity and coverage of them on websites and magazines has got me wondering, what are other peoples thoughts about them and other trout fishing topics.
I caught my first tiger trout today, May 30th in Pennsylvania at howls run outside of Ebensburg. I personally had no idea that they were stalked at all in Pa, and had never heard of anyone I knew catching one. I did some research on the Pa fish and game commission website and found out that they're a hybrid cross-breed between a brook trout and a brown trout. It was about 12-13 inches in length maybe, average for fish around here, but it had unique eye shape and a distinct pattern on its body.
One of my friends teased me for not keeping it because it was so rare for around here but I released it hoping, like all the other fish I catch, that it would grow and even spawn so there could be more tiger trout.
Overall I just found it unique that there is this rare type of trout around my hometown area, but it left me curious and wanted to know what other people had to think of this encounter and if anyone else has found tigers to be stalked in their area.

Nope can't say that i've ever actually seen one in person. They defeinitely don't stock them in maine. But I'm pretty sure they won't reproduce in the wild as it's likely sterile. Most fish hybrids that get stocked typically are.
