Welcome to Outdoor Life
Camping
Greetings All,
I have a hundred year old farmhouse of my family's that I am responsible for. My mom still lives there but it has not been updated since probably the 1960s. In the next couple years I really have to determine its future. Frame and structure-wise it is good old hardwood, but will need a new roof, and some basement work. Location is NE South Dakota.
The desired end-state is to be able to convert it to a cabin that I can leave shut down over the course of the winter. FABULOUS hunting and fishing off of the site. Has anybody got experience with such projects? What about "green building?" I wouldnt mind taking the place off the grid completely if technology would work out that way. Thanks for anyplace you can steer me.
that would depend on what you have in mind, while doing our cabin we put in peeled cedar post for rails, & did all cabinets ourselves, lined the inside with cedar and cut our own trees and lumber for the job- if you can go into more specific detail of what you would like to do it would be a great help...
I'd be interested in your progress. Living in a low-tech off the grid option is do-able and fun. Look for any of the available "green" information and adapt it. Be sure to include drains to empty any standing water (toilets, pipe traps) when you close down for the season.
