.22 mag

. Uploaded on March 25, 2009

while checking calf feeders recently 2 boar hogs ran off, all i had was a winchester .22 mag with a 3-9 40x tasco scope, they were at about 200 yards, at a hard run going through brush broad sided, i killed them both of them they weighed about 200 lbs each, was it wise to shoot at that range under those circumstances with that gun

Aaron, You got some good killing shots and that's great. I can't say it was wise or unwise to shoot at that range because I wasn't there and it obviously worked.
Because of my personal history I always count on Mr. Murphy showing up when I least want him to. Which is why I prefer big bore guns that will be more effective in "crunch time" scenarios. I would not have been able to kill those pigs because neither my 629 Smith or my 1911 is overly effective at the range you specified.
Could my Smith kill them at that range, yeah probably, Elmer Keith killed a mule deer at around 600 yards with a 4" barreled Model 29. I am not Elmer Keith and I would not try it shooting anything at that range.
I can't say what you shoot is right or wrong, I have a personal preference toward the larger bore weapons. But that is MY preference, and I don't like people who try to tell me how I have to decide and I suffer the consequences of their decision. It's not like you need a shot and are not sure you want it or not, even though you might die.
In order to be consistent, I can recommend a different gun but you are the one who has to carry it. If it works for you, go for it.

Heck, I'm impressed. Have been considering a .22 mag for a medium-sized varmint gun and was wondering how effective it'd be. Keep hearing the "power way out of proportion to its size" line, and this experience would sure back that up. Would've never thought you could take a boar at 200 yds with one, though...

The 22 Magnum is a great round and has served me well in the past………..

On my days on the Trap line the 22 magnum was the #1 choice when it came to beaver!!

As my father had the oldest registered trap line in northern Alberta it also
Was there when you needed it, it can handle Moose at very close range though the eye…

And also good for beaver up to 40 yards……….

Great all around caliber……

That's a great shot. I would have taken that shot with my .22 mag. If the marksman is comfortable with the weapon and confident at that range, then put the cross-hairs behind it's ear and turn it off like a switch. However 200 yds. is about as far as I would attempt a shot with my .22mag.

Kentuky windage and a little luck worked for you that day. I would of preferred a little more gun and a little less distance so that the chances of a wounded and lost suffering critter wouldnt cost me some sleep.

i know that this sounds terrible but who cares. there is no season on hogs so if they die they die and if they don`t they probably wouldn`t have come back but some great shooting on your part. a .22 mag is a great little rifle and the range is up to the shooter if you feel comfortable take the shot. i would have at least shot at them even if i knew i wasn`t going to hit them.

I've heard that the most popular deer calibers in Ark. is a 30-30 and the 22 mag. But their probably better shots than I'll ever be -- keep protecting us from those big bad boars
