How do you feel about wearing back tags while hunting?
Are there any other outdoor sports that require the participants or any other citizen to wear a government issued ID number on their person?
All my life I lived and hunted in a state with no back tag requirement. At one time that state tried to pass a back tag law but the hunters stood their ground and said no. Then I moved to a state that requires deer hunters and only deer hunters to wear a back tag at all times while hunting.
In discussing this with some other hunters in this state they seem to not care and many times look at me like I am an alien from another planet for worrying about such a small thing. Or they may complain the tag is simply inconvenient to wear.
To me this issue concerns my personal freedom. I love & appreciate freedom. As a life long supporter of the 2nd amendment I have opposed any and all firearm registration schemes.

Is being required to wear a back tag the equivalent of the state registering the person (hunter)?

Am I over sensitive on this or do others feel similarly?

First time I've herd of such a thing charlie elk.. I see that as something a antihunter threw in the law book. I mean look how much that takes away the whole hunt when you hear paper crumbling all day long. It would get to the point that your more worried about the number then worried about the hunt. I see as a way to take away from the whole hunting feeling in that way it will drive some first time hunters away. I think it sucks & charlie there is plenty of space up here in Montana for outdoorsmen!

It seems to me that some of the eastern states require it. I think it is a ridiculous requirement but that's just me. I have hunted in a variety of different places for a variety of different prey. I have no problem with requiring tags or a license. But that does not allow for those of us from states with a lifetime license opportunity. I carry that license everywhere I go, it is always with me in my wallet, how do you put that on your back.

dropjhook actually it was not the anti hunters that passed this requirement it was the hunters who agreed to do it themselves. I hear it was to stop trespassing (with the number on the back trespasser could be ID-ed), well landowners still complain about trespass. Of course if someone is going to break the law they will take the tag off. Duh!
Bo, this is a separate 3x9" tag printed on expensive plastic type material. Only your ID number is on it. It is placed in a plastic envelope affair with a large safety like pin that is to be stuck through your outermost clothing layer. Not Gore-Tex friendly.
Even while hunting on my own land and other private property this tag is suppose to be displayed in the middle of my back.
Glad to hear you guys have never heard of back tags it would suck if this were to spread around the country.
I have a goal before passing on to the great happy hunting grounds - to hunt something in every state of the union. So far I have hunted in 37 states none of which require a back tags. Only my home state.
Montana is a great state to hunt in except your NR tags are a bit spendy. But then as they say you get what you pay for. LOL

Heard/seen them(never had to wear one). You got your lic. on you that should be all you'd need as far as I'm concerned.

my state requires back tags for deer season only,i think one big reason is to stop poachers, the d.n.r. are able to check hunters with binocs to make sure hunters are legal.i.e. different color every year. i would rather be checked out from afar instead of having game wardens disrupt my hunt by walking up on my blind or treestand. we have alot of poachers here in wisconsin, so i have no problem with it. besides, you can't even feel it on your back, and it doesn't make any noise.

Ok I agree with all that..we have many many many poachers where i live. But a back ID# someone can hack into there low protected pc system what keeps track of evreyones ID# then they can steal a # throw it on there back and then pretty much do what they want because they have someone elses # on there back so not only do they get away they have the rong person when they catch up with the person who had the ID# handed to them. Poaching has been going on since people started drawing lines on the earth saying this land is mine. So the only way to stop poaching is to not go by those lines anymore but you & I know that will never happen.
