Hunting

Diversity

. Uploaded on October 14, 2009

I'm truly an avid, passionate, motivated outdoorsman. I was raised in the west and was taught a great deal out in the wilderness about all the mountains, animals and its majesties.

One thing that boggles my mind when I go out on my excursions it that I have to always look behind my back everytime I go out.
I've had accounts of people smashing my car windows and tipping over all of my hunting and camping supplies after heading back to my campground after a hard days hunting. I just want to know if any of you other hunters feel the same way I do on this topic on what its like; to go out on your own on public land. I just love the outdoors and I want to pass it on to my children, but there are some aweful things that have happened to me out there whether it may be the cause of racism or just plain stupidity.

I would still like to continue my trecks in the wild, but so many things have hampered me wanting to go and just enjoy the beautiful wilderness.

Any comments or suggestions help. Thanks a bunch fellow outdoorsmen!

Most likely it comes from stupidity, but then so does racism. We've all heard "you can't fix stupid." Stupid is as stupid does." They are all true. We are in a cultural war which seeks to break down the very fabric of America and the upbringing the youth are getting today is deplorable.
But then I know some adults that I would not admit to knowing when I see the way they behave. When we encounter the trials of this life, it allows us to show what kind of people we are. Those trials are the cause of our response, they are the outlet that shows our soul to the world.
When you tip over a cup of coffee, the coffee is not spilled because it was tipped, but because that is what is in the cup. Trials in life are the same. Our response to these situations are just and indicator of what is inside of us.
When people do stupid things, they just show that they really are stupid.

I wont sugar coat anything for you on this one yes there is tons of stupid out there & there is still also alot of racism in america but not so out in the open as it used to be. You cant let these people stop you they want control just like or goverment they think we have no right to be in there certin hunting area even though its public. My tribe owns millions of acres of land & me as a hunter know pretty much where I can & cant hunt but one day this half cocked rancher comes pulling up beside me telling me to get off his property! Me & my dad laughed at him sorry but this is tribal land & we can hunt here any time we feel like it. He then says no this is my land now get the hell out of here now!! Nope we are not leaving. "I will call fish & game on you"hehehe go ahead they will tell you the same thing we just said. you cant shot no deer on this side of the fence oh yeah but when they jump that fence we can sit here and shoot at them all day long. He was so red thought we was going to have to shoot it out but he gave up then drove back home. He was mad because this peace of land was well hidden and most tribal members didnt know about this spot deer cross this area by the hundreds and it was our right to hunt there. This year I'm sure he feels like a ass because I know alot of local hunters & also know alot of meat hunters & you can imagine what I told them all when they asked me "DJH, wheres all the big herds hanging at" hehehe well there was is a spot just right out there where a rancher was trying to keep us out but it is tribal we have the right to shoot there and there is always deer beding by those two ponds in the brush. leagal hunters been getting meat from there almost evrey week now and I hope this sends a msg to ranchers and people just like him. We will not back down from your type evrey action has a reaction but this reaction just bit the rancher in the behind come to find out he was protecting that area because his famliy was poaching out there evrey year I dont know how long this has been going on but I'm sure it stoped because the place is crawling with meat hunters!! All I got to say is use the best thing god gave us all a brain to fight back and in my case local hunters help too. I know that isnt close to what you wanted to hear but thats the only thing that kinda relates to your ?.

Bo, I have read your coffee spilled comment several times and it finally registered.. it reminds me of a Zen style Koan which is their version of our bible parables. Sometimes the best lessons are the ones that you are perplexed and work to understand.
Having been raised by parents who taught me to learn from my mistakes, it took me some time to learn that most of the population has sadly neglected this part of their education. Furthermore, those who do not learn from their mistakes take on an even more disturbing characteristic - they don't acknowledge they made a mistake. This is accomplished by always blaming someone or something when things go wrong. It is damn hard to learn from YOUR mistakes when you are not prepared to acknowledge you made a mistake. It is an easy path, a dishonest and cowardly path, and a self destructive habit that impacts those individuals, their families, friends and work associates. So, when you meet such fools while on the hunt and you are at odds with their conduct don't expect to remedy the problem with choice words or a lecture. These characters have spent a live time getting that screwed up and they unlikely to listen to reason or care for that matter. Still, what goes around comes around... their kids are going to give them nightmares!

Kody, when I first heard that analogy I thought the guy was full of it and I think I told him so. Some years later it hit me that he was so right.I always wanted to blame others for making me mad when it was the anger that I had internalized that was spilling out whenever someone tipped over my cup. Once I dealt with those issues, I didn't have the anger spilling out when I got tipped over.
People who don't want to take responsibility for their action can always blame others to excuse their own shortcomings. Even today the White House is blaming Bush for the hole we have dug since January. They keep digging the hole deeper and blame Bush more.
There are so many other examples where people cannot accept that their problems are their fault. I knew some guys who blamed Viet Nam for their drug issues. I also knew guys who blamed the Army in general for their drug issues because they didn't go to Viet Nam.

Anytime a person gets in the 'blame everybody but me' mode, he demonstrates his own culpability in the issue. Life is made up of choices. When we make stupid choices, (and all of us have at some point in time)we cannot rectify the situation until we accept the burden for what we did. Only then can we get past it.

About the best you can do is to raise our own kids to be the responsible and substantial characters we need in this world. I was a shadow of who my son and daughter have become when I was their age. To me that means my wife and I must have done something right. I hope that they will be able to say the same thing about their children someday. When you make choices that cause you to diminish as opposed to grow, you are likely dooming your children to the same destructive cycle.

In terms of outdoing me with a shotgun or rifle, I am not prepared to give them any credit as yet... I tell them their prowess comes of the good hand to eye coordination that comes of youth, wait and see what happens when they are not so limber and the eyes not as bright. Oh, to be young again.

Bo, you and Kody add a new and excellent dimension to this outdoor site. The 'spilled coffee' concept is great. I try to take responsibility for my actions, even though the easy way out is to blame someone or something else (which seems to have become the national pastime). Outdoorpassion, I commiserate with you on the difficulties you have experienced and hope you can continue to enjoy your outdoor pursuits and not let the b*****ds drag you down.

Four years ago while hunting in a N.F. area we returned to our Camping area to find Fire Trucks, Helicopters, and about 150 acres burned.. including 20 individual camps including our Campsite.. there was allot of property loss including a couple nice RVs. The N.F. Police stated that the fire was set intentionaly by a Anti Hunting group..I refused from that time on to let that stop me from Hunting in OUR National Forest.

We cant change those who have chose to act in ignorance,, but we can keep our promise to be ambassadors to our heritage, My family has Hunted in this area for years my family and now my children Hunt there, Hike and Camp in the same N.F. area.

Hold true to your passion, family and friends.. no one can take that from you.

pineywoods,
There is an expression in Spanish "No permite que los ilegitamos se pongan abajo" In Latin it is "Illegitamas non carborundum" Don't let the (you should be able to figure out the ilegitamos and illegitamas) get you down. It is so true, so true.
