Predator techniques
The area I hunt in Missouri is overrun with coyotes. I intend to begin hunting them (after the deer season is over). Missouri has a long coyote hunting season.
Any recommendations on how to get started? I don't want to spend a lot of money, but what gear would I need and what techniques should I use?
Thanks.
Sounds like it would be a good idea to turn your deer hunting rifle into a double duty rifle. If you have something like a .243 or a 25-06 that would be as easy as buying factory rounds loaded with lighter bullets. The makers of ammunition offer lighter rounds in more calibers than in the past. If your particular rifle does have what you need on the shelf it is the perfect opportunity to start loading your own. There are inexpensive starter kits and once outfitted you will be able to load for the coyotes and tailor premium ammo for your deer hunting at a fraction of the cost.
I played around loading my old .300 Winchester Magnum loading every .30 cal bullet I had on the shelf. It shot 110 gr, 130gr, 150gr, 165 gr, 168 gr, 180 gr, 200 gr, 220 gr bullets remarkably well.
As an added bonus some rifles, like the .300 Win. Mag , will shoot to relatively the same point of impact with bullets of different weights.
you could also start by buying a predator call and or a decoy like the moving onesfound on cableas or other websites. also you could do hat kody and start loading lighter bullets or buying them. other than that you will not need much if anything else exceppt luxurys for coyote hunting
I also would like to start hunting coyotes near my home in Illinois. The biggest potential problem is that they may not respond well to calling. I'm thinking about setting a bait pile near a creek that they frequent. Last year I found a partially eaten deer in this area.
Use multiple types of coyote calls, many people only appeal the dogs hunger. If legal in Missouri buy an electronic call that has the classic rabbit in distress call but also pup howls , pup in distress, and dog in heat calls. Sometimes coyortes just plain aren't hungry but want some companionship, and the urge to breed can be a powerful motivator.
use your deer rifle and buy an electronic caller or a critter call
depending on the amount of calling pressure in your area I would start with a rabbit call (they are fairly inexpensive) If you have a lot of callers in your area I would recommend investing in a howler and practice with it until you feel comfortable with it. you can use the two calls in a sequence to make it sound like a coyote has caught a rabbit. Happy Hunting
For coyote hunting I use a small lever action brush gun & a cheap predator call.
