Welcome to Outdoor Life
Predators & Small Game
My wife was going to fix oriental food a few days ago, but her Peanut Oil had turned. So I poured it out on the ground in my yard as an experiment. Apparently, it is a good squirrel attractant. Is this legal for hunting? I live in Texas.
I think it is okay in maryland. certainly corn is another good bait. they certainly come to my feed when i am deer hunting
also wanted to mention that most of the squirrles i have shot were on the ground. i just quietly walk around and use a call and alot of the time they will come to the bottom of the tree. and for a gun i luke to add some chalange so i use a crossman 2250b .22 cal pellet gun. it is certainly enough power, goes completely through a squirrel.
in my experience there is no point in bating or luring squrils, in south eastern oklahoma you dont have to look hard for squrils
If you want to bait them, then take a coffee can and drill holes in the bottom of it so water can drain out. Then nail it to a tree and put corn in it, my grandma used to it to feed her squirrels but i always shot and ate them.
i think it's leagle if it's not it should be
There are some counties in Texas that there is no open season for squirrel anytime of the year, some with open season October 1, 2008-February 1, 2009 and May 1-31, with a daily bag limit of 10 squirrels and some with no closed season, so check the book or a game ranger before you find yourself in some trouble. I would hate to possibly lose my license and hunting privileges for several years for a squirrel. If I were you, I would go to http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/season/animal_listing/ and do some checking.
I have never baited squirrels while hunting, but I sure like the idea and am going to try it. I have not seen anything on the books here in Iowa about it being illegal.
Baiting squirrels...is mostly done by Mother nature..I prefer to enjoy the hunting as much as the getting..so ill continue to wander the woods and see if my luck combines with my knowledge and the squirrels time schedule to yield results.
