O.L.com,
Got the tip to check this site out from Ernie of Quaker Boy. Initail reaction was it is a little to busy (information overload). Most of the time I am looking for tips, how to's, equipment updates, etc verses reading stories about recipes from the Inaugural luncheon for example. I do like to read articles that keep me informed on the political front of our sport and real life stories also. So all-in-all not a bad site. I'll keep checking back.
You're doing a great job and the site looks good. Keep everybody informed on the latest goings on, and savvy enough for the new generation of kids that may spend time looking at your site. They are the hunting future. Hopefully they will get encouraged to try some of the things you show them.
I like everything about the new site except for how you guys have your stories posted. It would be much easier if you had the entire story on one page, rather than having to click through seven or eight different pages, each with slightly over a paragraph on them, to read a story. Makes it a hassle to read through a story quickly as I am browsing the site. Other than that, I really enjoy the new look!
We need to have some more areas under fresh water fishing. List each type of species to post under. Examples : Small Stream Trout/ Big Lake Trout/Muskies/walleye/crappies/carp for examples.....There needs to be a fly and traditional area.
I think it is alot better now its more organized and i can find stuff more easily i like the movies also and i think you guys are doing a great job keep it up!
Thanks for all the comments and keep looking for bugs. We know of a bunch and are working on them (beating IT guys regularly trying to get them resolved!)
live2hunt: welcome to OL! If I may ask, how did you find the site?
LenHarris: We debated breaking the Fishing section down by species, but it would just get too out of hand too quickly with all those species in the drop-down navigation. However, every story has a series of tags that allows you to search by species, method, habitat, etc. We built it that was for searchability reasons as well as giving us the ability to build out the site in the future according to user participation (e.g., bighead carp have a huge following for some reason, we can easily redesign the taxonomy/navigation to create a section for bighead carp enthusiasts). But for launch wanted to keep it simple and let it grow and mature and let you, the users, dictate which sections expand and contract.
Hi, anything new takes lil time to get everything right!! Looks like Uall R on the right path and pleasure to read and use!! Outstanding effort--Carry ON!!! YOC
For awhile there were a lot of problems, the “next” tab wouldn’t advance pictures, certain subject tabs wouldn’t work, little internet gremlins that came and went. It’s been quite a while since I fought any of those problems and now I love the new OL website! There is a lot of information with great user and admin. interaction. The sub-categories within the main subject tabs are very easy to navigate and it makes searching for a specific kind of article very easy. Keep it up!
The new site is just plan fun to be on and the message board is a fantastic idea. Boards are gaining more and more popularity as we find our hunting community is closer than ever. OLN has always been a staple in my reading and now in my online activity
So far so good. I like the ease of access. Just wish more people would partake in answering questions. Keep up the good work. The magazine is going back to old school Outdoor Life, SWEEEET!!!!!
Based on recent developments may I suggest the creation of a LEGISLATIVE ISSUES topic site? With the pending ban of lead containing fishing tackle on Nat. Park Serv. lands and the backdoor assault on ammunition supply, I can only assume, unless the many sportsmen out there get ACTIVE AND VOCAL, we will lose more and more of our heritage and rights to an administration that has demonstrated it's antagonism toward our sport repeatedly. Thanks.
We just have to have our hunting traditions where new hunters and young persons get to see what the outdoors brings to those that put down their video consoles and go outside. So for me ..I think we need this to succeed.
I enjoy seeing comments from hunters all over the country. Lots of opinions shared and some knowledgeable people contributing. I really enjoy occasions when someone response directly to one of my comments. It is reassuring to know someone is paying attention.
