Whitetail Deer

Antlers or Horns

. Uploaded on February 16, 2009

Ok.... what are they antlers or horns? For years I was told Whitetail Deer had antlers and not horns. I was told they were Antlers if the were shed every year and horns if they didn't. In the past two years I've noticed more and more outdoor show personalities calling them horns. Is there new research I'm not aware of or were we all wrong for years and didn't know it.

they are called antlers but i think most people think it is easier to say horns so that is why they do it or people when they are young are told anything coming from an animals head are horns

I'm not 100% on this, but i believe antlers are bone/calcium, and horns are made from hair(antelope horns) I actually pulled a horn off of a eruropean mounted antelope and there is a bone base underneath them.

You ARE CORRECT!!! Antlers (deer, elk, moose, etc)are shed
horns (cows,sheep,buffalo) are not!!
most of the TV personalities are IDIOTS!!!!!

Call em what you want but the facts are these.
Antlers fall off every year- (Deer, Moose, Elk, Etc.)
Horns grow year around- (Sheep, Mtn. Goats, Antalope, Steers).
Oh, COWS DON'T HAVE EITHER.
Hope this helps.

Some call my State Missoura, I call it Missouri. In Feb. I hunt the woods for shed antlers, not the farmers bull pen for shed horns.
