Welcome to Outdoor Life
Whitetail Deer
Does anyone have a good site that has a video of how to skin a deer,,or any good DVDs that show it? I have duck hunted for most of my life and now have moved to way out in the country and want to start huntin deer and bear. Took my first one to a butcher but want to do it myself to save some $$$.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide.
well there is lots of ways to do usually you hang the deer upside by its back legs and at the knee of the legs start there and take make a circular cut all the way around and start cutting directly down towards the hips then start peeling the skin off the legs with your knife blade. many videos are on youtube about how to do this there are also some less than textbook examples of it ahaha
The Kentucky dept. of fish and wildlife has a video the shows skinning through home butchering that is excellant. it is for sale i think they are $12. Hope this helps
Taylor1's advice is good. It really is a simple process once you get going. Unless the deer is really old and tough, the skin just about falls off when you get passed the legs.
You are doing the right thing by processing them yourself. Besides saving money, you can make sure the job is done right.
There are several good videos on youtube also try e-how...
The KY video is "Field Dressing to Freezer" from a 3 part TV series. EXCELLENT buy at $13.

My fav way is to hang the deer from the head. I cut the legs off at the knees and start cutting the skin away from it at the base of the head. Once I have it pulled down enough I get a golf ball and put it on the fur side and tie a rope around it and the skin and attach the other end of the rope to a 4wheeler and pull the skin right off the deer. I know it sounds strange but you don't get hair and little cuts all over the meat. Ive done it this way for about 10yrs now and I'm able to to skin one in about 5 minutes. Hope this helps you.
Another easy way to skin a deer is if you have a bobcat or a tractor with a loader avaliable. Like bellysweat you do the same preperation. You then drive the the wheels of the vechile onto the a good strong plank and lift it into the air. This is too takes about 5 minutes, and is a great way to skin multiple deer in a short peroid of time. The only problem we have seen with this method is it takes about 2 people and just make sure you go slowly or you may rip a should off. But once you get the hang of it is a quick and effective method
