Mossberg Introduces Recoil Reduction System on Select Pump-Action Shotguns - 5

Shotshell patterning pump gunners who’ve suffered through shoulder-thumping sessions at the local range know reduced recoil is but a sweet wishful dream—until now.

O.F. Mossberg and Sons, Inc. and Mathews, Inc. have partnered to develop a new recoil reduction system which will be featured on seven new Mossberg pump-action shotguns in 2013. The system features a unique Mossberg Dual-Comb (low and high profile inserts) stock design incorporating Mathews Harmonic Damper Technology combined with a newly re-engineered thermoplastic elastomer recoil pad.  [ Read Full Post ]

Fight Dog Diseases: Participate in Canine Research - 2

The overall health of our gun dogs – including the genetic health, physical fitness and psychological balance – all play a role in their ability to train and hunt. This is something we all know to one degree or another, and it’s something that’s moved to the forefront of my thoughts after Kona’s scare with bone cancer and my involvement with a Paw Print Genetics, a new canine diagnostic and carrier-screening genetic laboratory, here in Spokane, Wash.

If you’ve ever lost a pet due to a disease, a gun dog or any other critter, you know the pain and sense of loss it brings, and the wish continually coming to mind that a cure existed. Put simply, the feeling sucks.

To that end, the AKC Canine Health Foundation oversees the research of many canine health issues; supporting them in several ways is an important step to finding cures for many of the issues that plague gun dogs. [ Read Full Post ]

How Sequestration Could Impact Your Hunting and Fishing: National Wildlife Refuge Closures - 6

With the sequestration (an $85 billion across-the-board cut from the federal budget) set to take place by at least 11:59 p.m. tonight, a lot of people are wondering exactly what the impacts will be. If the White House and Congress can't come to an agreement, and it doesn't look they will, there will be a forced 8.2 percent budget cut to all non-exempt federal programs including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. National Park Services, and the U.S. Geological Survey.

What it could mean for you, is less access to hunting, hiking, and fishing opportunities at national wildlife refuges. [ Read Full Post ]

Duck Dynasty Responds to Morrissey's Insults Over Jimmy Kimmel Show - 4

The Robertson family of Duck Dynasty turned the proverbial other cheek to 1980s Smith’s frontman Morrissey on Jimmy Kimmel Live by saying they had no problem with the singer, his displeasure for hunters and meat eaters, or vegans in general. This, of course, after the always-melancholy singer canceled his appearance on the show citing that he couldn’t risk being seen with the Robertson family as they are “animal serial killers.”

Turkey Hunting Tips: Mega Decoy Spreads for Early Season Toms - 4

Early in the spring season, when turkey flocks are still in winter formation, your one or two decoys may not be enough to attract a gobbler. So create a flock. Borrow a collection of assorted dekes from your buddies. Buy cheap foam models from the sale bin at your sporting-goods store. Resurrect tattered veterans from the back of your gear closet. Just as with field spreads for geese, make sure you have a mix of feeding, sentry, and loafing turkey decoys. And leave room in the middle as a “landing zone” for incoming gobblers. Eddie Bauer: A Serious Hunter and Dog Man - 3

I just returned from Seattle after visiting the Eddie Bauer headquarters and getting the low down on their new Sport Shop line of clothing, which focuses primarily on upland hunting and shooting sports (for now).

For anyone younger than 35 years old, Eddie Bauer is probably more synonymous with suburban malls than with outdoor sports and clothing. However, Eddie Bauer started as an outfitter business for hunters and anglers, with Bauer owning the first U.S. patent for a goose-down coat. Beyond making coats, sleeping bags and other gear for adventurous travelers, Bauer was a dog man. And a serious one at that. [ Read Full Post ]

Why it is Ethical to Hunt Big Game with Dogs - 8

As a dog man, I believe hunting with canines enriches the experience of pursuing game beyond merely being outside and pursuing your quarry. Working with an animal to take another defines teamwork, evolution, and the relationship between man and dog.

Beyond just enabling us to take animals – be it pheasants, quail, chukar, ducks, geese, coyotes, cougars, bears, raccoons, or whatever else – hunting with a dog allows us to take some game in a more ethical manner. [ Read Full Post ]
