Handgun Ammo

The .500 S&W Magnum was introduced in 2003 as the most powerful production revolver ever made. This year Smith & Wesson introduces the fastest.

The new S&W 460 XVR (Extreme Velocity Revolver) is a straight-walled case in .45-caliber. Chambered in the X-frame revolver, it launches a 200-grain spitzer bullet at 2,300 feet per second with 2,350 foot-pounds of energy from an 8 3/8-inch barrel.

COR-BON

Deer Load: During a hunting trip this January, I shot the first deer ever with the new revolver (a trophy fallow buck taken at 100 yards). The load I used was Cor-Bon/Dakota's 200-grain Cor-Bon Hunter with the Barnes X-Bullet, which has been introduced for 2005.

Hot Hog Loads: The 265-grain Barnes wide-mouth hollowpoint load at 1,800 fps with 1,907 ft.-lb. of energy was a sledgehammer on big boar hogs during the same hunt.

Medium Game: Cor-Bon's .460 offering is a 325-grain A-Frame hollowpoint.

Big Game: The 395-grain cast load should be suitable for the heaviest handgun game.

HORNADY

Medium Game: Another addition to the .460 S&W line is Hornady's 200-grain SST. This should prove to be a capable round on deer-size game.

Big Game: For larger animals like elk, Hornady is rolling out a 500-grain XTP flat-point in .500 S&W that yields 1,425 fps and 2,254 ft.-lb.

WINCHESTER

Although S&W's new .460 XVR handgun grabbed a lot of attention at the 2005 SHOT Show, the .500 S&W remains very popular, and continues to inspire new loads. Winchester enters the .500 S&W Magnum arena with a 400-grain Platinum Tip load at 1,800 fps and 2,877 ft.-lb.

BLACK HILLS

Two new calibers join Black Hill's Gold Line of premium hunting loads.

Deer Load: For the whitetail woods, a .270 WSM launches a 140-grain Nosler AccuBond bullet at 3,000 fps and 2,987 ft.-lb.

Big Game: Hunters chasing elk, bear and other big-game species have a .300 WSM with the 180-grain AccuBond at 2,950 fps and 3,478 ft.-lb. and the 175-grain Sierra MatchKing BT at 2,950 fps and 3,381 ft.-lb.

The new AccuBond bullet will also be added to four calibers already in Black Hills' product line: .300 Win. Mag., 7mm Rem. Mag., .30/06 and the .308 Win. with a 180-grain AccuBond at 2,600 fps and 2,701 ft.-lb.

FEDERAL

Great Value: Hunters looking for premium bullet performance at a popular price will want to examine Federal's new Fusion line of centerfire hunting cartridges. Federal says the new Fusion bullet utilizes a skived flat tip, an optimized boattail profile and a molecular-fused jacket that eliminates jacket-core separation and maintains consistent expansion and maximum weight retention at all ranges. Initial offerings will be in .243 Win., .270 Win., .270 WSM, 7mm WSM, 7mm Rem. Mag., .30/30 Win., .308 Win., .30/06, .300 Win. Mag. and .300 WSM.

Shotgun Loads

FEDERAL

Duck Loads: Ultra-Shok High Density is a nontoxic shot that is softer, and 25 percent heavier, than steel shot. These waterfowl loads are available in 12-gauge 3- and 3½-inch chamberings carrying 1 5/8 ounces of shot.

Turkey Loads: Turkey hunters will want to check out the new Flitecontrol wad. It opens from the rear and produces tighter patterns than conventional wads, Federal says.

The new 12-gauge Flitecontrol loads will be available in two configurations:

  • High Velocity (1,300 fps)

  • Magnum Lead (1,150 fps)

Something else in the offing for turkey hunters is Federal's Magnum Heavyweight Turkey load. It uses shot that is 35 percent denser than lead, producing tighter patterns and deeper penetration. It will be available in 3- and 3½-inch 12-gauge loads.

Slug Loads: For slug-gun hunters, Federal has introduced its TruBall system, which improves accuracy in smoothbore shotguns, the company says (see sidebar).

Fiocchi Upland Loads: Three new 12-gauge loads are being rolled out:

  • Super Crusher (1,400 fps)

  • Paper Crusher (1,300 fps)

  • Paper Light (1,180 fps)

All three come in 2¾-inch shells with 1 ounce of No. 7½ or 8 shot.

Hornady Slug Loads: The new SST muzzleloader bullet technology comes to the slug-gun arena with its new SST 12-gauge Shotgun Slug. Designed for rifled shotgun barrels, it uses a 300-grain copper-jacketed SST slug in a sabot to produce 2,050 fps and 2,332 ft.-lbs.

REMINGTON

Slug Loads: Remington now offers its BuckHammer slug in a 3-inch, 1-ounce 20-gauge at 1,550 fps and 2,470 ft.-lb.

WINCHESTER
