Tackle Test '09
The hottest rods and reels available in 2009.
![]() Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris Gold Overall Rating: 31⁄2 stars
This elegant and ergonomic low-profile reel fits in the hand so well you’ll forget it’s there. It casts smoothly, and the dual breaking system makes it easy to get dialed. It offers a flipping/pitching/bottom-bouncing switch. The one-piece aluminum frame resisted torque while fighting fish and the reel proved its 14 pounds of certified drag pressure by stopping a number of largemouths from beelining for the lily pads. This reel is great for a number of diverse applications, and a bargain given all the features and fine gold finish. ($180; basspro.com)

Some good-looking tackle here. Thanks for presenting the scores in report-card form. Makes it easy to understand.
Wondering how many different reels your crew reviewed. For example, the U.S. Reel models are really getting the buzz, esp. in bass circles.
Goodness?? gotta get a sponsor or bigger budget$$ glad i've got enuff gear to last me rest of my life.I'm still back in the ugly stik/round bait-abu-garcia type red- caster generation.amazing thing is the this old gear still keep's going like the pink e/bunny on TV!!I can't berate what I haven't tried guess my ammo busdget takes up 80% of the recreation allotment!! Guess I need to learn to reload someday. Carry ON!! YOC
This was put together very well. It does make it easier to understand using the "report card" method.
Good job on the reporting. It makes it easier to pick and choose. Now if I didn't have to drive 100 miles to a Bass Pro Shop to check them out.
Folks, The Symetre is actually $99, not 75 dollars. At a local retailer, and at the two largest catalog merchants.
That is a large increase from last year, and the spare Aluminum spool furnished then, is not furnished in '09.
Good and Helpful article
GO SHIMANO!!!
real helpful and informational article. I LOVE SHIMANO!!!!!!!!!!!!
Abu all the way
Great Subject – light salt/fresh. From the West Coast – Gulf and East, light inshore is exploding. I was left with more questions than answers. I don’t think comparing reels that ranged from $70 - $270 is realistic. If the Daiwa- Fuego($279) had the highest performance, would I be able to obtain the same performance buying the Daiwa – Coastal ($139)? Eliminating wind knots might be worth $100. If the Symetre is so great, maybe the Saros would be worth the $130 because it is designed for saltwater? Regarding Rods – Hats off to Berkley - $80 taking on St Croix’s $360. What about the Carrot Stix? Or the St Croix Mojo spinning rod? I know there are a lot of scenarios, if you need help testing let me know.

great gear, great gear reveiws.and hay, like the gear you see because i do.this is an outstanding article. GO SHIMANO!!!!
I'm on the band wagon. Great article. Short and sweet. #1 Pfleuger.
wheres the penn sargus in this test, all metal body for durability and corrosion resistance and casts like a dream for 75 bucks, better then the 75dollar shimano symetre for the money...basically a symetre designed for use in saltwater and cheaper then the shimano saros
wow thanx alot was actually lookin for a new spinning reel and rod set thanx now i know what to look for on my next tackle trip
The johnny morris gold series reel is much higher than 180 dollers. The johnny morris signiture series sells for 180.
I have to say that I've been partial to Shimano in the past. They offer solid quality with reasonable pricing. Although, on a recent Flathead River fishing trip I had the chance to try a friends newer Abu Garcia casting reel and I was really impressed with the overall smoothness of it. I don't know that I could spend an extra $80 for that, but that's just me. I tend not to buy the best, but instead spend my hard earned dough for items of good value. So for now, I'll stick with my Shimano reel and will take care of it.
I bought the pflueger patriarch and it is an absolutley fantastic reel. Pflueger all the way!
I paired it with the St. Croix Mojo Bass topwater technique specific rod and it is a great combo
