Barking Up Bushytails![]() Rhea's love is raising squirrel dogs, but his passion is teaching children to hunt. When he took four youngsters (Matt Sutton, Jared Sutton, Zach Sutton and Shaun Kizer) to hunt with Ranger in east Arkansas, we were there to photograph some of the fun.
The morning started with a review of hunting safety fundamentals. "Safety first," Jim says. "Watch your gun barrels. Keep your safety on until you see the squirrel..." Photo by Outdoor Life Online Editor AdvertisementADVERTISEMENT |

I don't like to hunt squirrells with a dog because they climb a tree and just sit there and let you shoot them.I also do not beleive in hunting bear or cougar with dogs because if you miss than you can just shoot again. I do beleive in huntin rabbits, coons, and birds with dogs because rabbits have holes that they can dive in and birds can fly away and coons are very good at escaping dogs and they can have holes in trees that they can hide in.
it's not that hard to get vermin at my house my dog who is a mut a stray that walked up our drivway when i was 3 got two chipmonks in 2 days he was on his tieout to also he's only a foot and a half high and 9 years old.i just about hit a bush tail with my bow from about 30 feet and i'm a begginer only had my bow about a month.i wouldent need a dog to get a bushy tail.
I commend Mr. Jim Rhea for introducing these future hunters to the enjoyment of hunting with a dog. There is alot of satisfaction and pride in raising and training a good hunting dog. It doesn't matter what type game you hunt; there is a special bond between a hunter and his dogs. I am sure that it was an experience that these kids will talk about when they are old men.(Keep our traditions alive, take time to introduce kids and friends to hunting in a positive way)
I can hit small game with my PSE or .22 do you really need a shot gun o and I don`t need a dog. but I am glad you are getting kids outdoors I wish my Dad would more
I love hunting squirrels. But I use a pellet gun . they keep on blowing theirselves up on the power line.
I coon hunt and I love the sound of the dogs. Once we shot a coon and it weighed about 20 pounds my dad and my grandpa made me carrie it out of the woods and the dogs kept trying to take it from me!
Just yesterday I shot into a squirrel nest and a squirrel came flying out I did it to the same squirrel two days in a row. P.S. the first shot did'nt kill him.
I would have to disagree with Web7 squirrels are so much more elusive than coon. You get to the tree and they might already be fleeing or if you shoot and miss once they will run and jump trees to get to hole which they usually find. Coon are usually in the tree motionless. Well in the tree with the dog that I have. Some dogs don't find them as much which might make them seem hard to tree but squirrels are much harder because they jump on every tree as the run through the woods. This is why a squirrel dog gets a lot of slick trees.
my sqirrels keep blowen up with the power line to
I have been involved wih coon hounds over forty years, I have hunted bear behind a pack of hounds. Hunting squirrels with dogs is different I started hunting with Mt Fiest three years ago. To state that hunting with dogs is easy? I personaly can harvest more squirrels by sitting down in the woods and waiting. As tgb states it is the raising and trainng of the dogs, plus young hunters like walking in the woods, they will get bored setting. Keep it interesting.
i have been hunting coon for 13 years ive hunted squirrel just as long and you dont need dogs to hunt squirrels but it would be a task to hunt coon without um i think dogs for squirrels just takes the fun out of it
I think it's great that young boys and girls!,get a chance to hunt under the supervision of an expert and experienced hunter such as Jim Rhea. What a wonderful opportunity for those 4 boys!!
