Handguns: A Look Back (2007)
More and more hunters are accepting the challenge of big-game hunting with handguns. But there are a lot of adjustments long-gun shooters must make when downsizing. Bob McNally takes a look at what features you need to buy the right gun.
![]() Ruger's famous Redhawk line of heavy-caliber handguns takes on a new look with this easy-to-handle model featuring a short 2.5-inch barrel with the devastating hitting power of the .44 magnum cartridge. The stainless steel, double-action, six-shot revolver measures 8.5 inches overall, weighs 42 ounces and has completely adjustable rear sights. It sells for around $700. i dont know abuot yall but i love these clasic older model revolvers
What about the T/C Contender, that basically fathered hunting handguns (God bless Warren Center), and the Ruger Super Blackhawk? Classic workhorses for sure.
I had a blue steel Smith 29-2,8&3/8" barrel probably 20-25 years ago. I loved it but I'm short and carrying that in a shoulder holster was difficult to maneuver. I now carry a 629 Classic Hunter, 6" barrel, non fluted cylinder, full underlug barrel with an Aimpoint 5000 sight. Love that gun, God bless Elmer Keith.
My first hunting revolver was a 6 inch colt python with a 2 power scope, it did well on whitetails and was a great and reliable gun. My dad admired it to the point I made a gift of it to him. He has taken deer and Hogs with it and loves the gun. I now use a Taurus 6.5 inch Raging Bull in .454 casull...I have taken many hogs and two deer with it...I love that its ported and has more than one shot like many hunting handguns.
