Best Fly Rods '08
The Outdoor Life test team flogs the water to a froth and puts fly rods to the ultimate torture test so that you don't have to. Which ones came out on top? Which ones are the best buys? Here are the final results for the 5-weights.
![]() Orvis ZG Helios 865-4
This 8 1/2-footer has a steep taper that's powerful and progressive (it doesn't feel stiff at all), and it's as much a pleasure to cast at 20 feet as it is at greater distances. Blanks in this new series are 30 percent lighter than Orvis' already feather-like Zero Gravity rods. Thermoplastic resins- instead of epoxy resins- allow construction with fewer graphite fibers yet no loss of strength. The graphite (rather than fiberglass) scrim also means less material for the same strength. Newly designed guides and components reduce weight even further. Price: $755 Contact: orvis.com Testers' comments: Versatile. Very light. Great tippet protection. Turns flies over like a piece of cake.
