Build Your Own Canoe
The Flathead Lake freight canoe is easy to build and will haul piles of gear or a couple of passengers.
![]() 1. Hull components are pre-finished with an epoxy coating, then assembled using plastic ties inserted through 1/8-inch-diameter holes drilled along the edges of the hull panels. Ties are gradually tightened, working in sequence around the entire hull, until the desired alignment is achieved and seams are tight. Photo by Paul Butler AdvertisementADVERTISEMENTAdvertisement |

Hey DJHook I have been in canoes with bigger guys than you as long as they are in front so I can see them doing their share of paddling we get along just fine.....
This one will carry you and a buddy with no problem.
I belive you charlie elk like i said I know nothing about building a caneo I just dont see myself building a quilty one like Paul built it would take lots of practice & lots of tools look at his shop looks like santas workshop with all those crafting tools. I would love to try one made by the hands of a seasond caneo maker though I think the man has a great idea!
Hunting while canoeing is a blast click on my namne and check out the joy of canoeing 12 pt style. That buck is over 200 lb.
Perhaps when I get back to MT I should bring my canoe, look you up and take you out. Any water around you?

As soon as I saw the boat I could tell it was a Paul Butler project. I've been tempted to try a couple of the projects he has on his site, but the spouse has plenty of projects on her "Honey do" list for me. However remodeling the bathroom doesn't seem like it would be as fun as a boat. Mr. Butler keep the wonderful do it your self projects coming. You are the man!
I'm going on a trip this year and am needing a canoe to use on the White River. I hear that there are some pretty good rapids on this river so I'm needing a canoe that can withstand this type of stress.wii softmod
Knowledge of the ability to handle a canoe under these conditions is the thing you need more. The Arkansas river is dangerous water and can become a monster with a small rain.Be safe in your adventures brother.
Ain't no friggin way I am trying that! I hate these kind of tutorials that show some dude who knows what the heck he is doing. It always makes me want to try to do it too, and I mess it up. Would like to have a nice boat like that though.
Nice boat--I like working with wood---however all the beer I would have to drink to get this project done--It would be far cheaper for me to go buy one already made---but I do like reading about this stuff. Please keep them coming--thanks
Fella's, don't sell yourselves short. 15 or so years ago Outdoor Life Put the plans for the 8 hour canoe in the magazine. I had very moderate woodworking skills but I tried it. Had a ball building it and another one paddling and electric motoring the local waters. Also the pride in answering that I built it when asked where I got it. I'm gonna dust things off and build this one too.
