  • Jug Fishing

We put reflective tape on our jugs and fish at night. It is a great way to beat the summer heat and also the river is a lot less crowded.

It’s probably been at least 40 years or longer since the recommended treatment for poisonous snakebites in the Official Boy Scout Handbook included instructions on sucking the venom from the victim’s wound. These days the general medical advice for snakebite is to transport the victim to the nearest medical facility for professional treatment.

A couple of summer's ago my rat terrier, Charlie, got bitten on the side of the face by a 4 1/2 foot timber rattler. We threw him in the truck and drove to the closest vet's office, which was 20 minutes away. The vet told us that Charlie should have been dead before we ever got there. Charlie recovered from the snake bite but he never was quite right. After the bite he got real nervous and it was like the snake had affected his central nervous system. charlie died recently but it was not because of any side effects from the snake bite.

  • Let Kids Hunt!

By the time I could walk, my father already had me in the mountains of Kentucky chasing bushytails with a single-shot .22 rifle. These fall trips ignited a fascination and passion for the outdoors that still burns deep inside of me today. At an early age, I could easily identify the different types of trees and various animal tracks in the woods. Hunting and the outdoors served as a classroom that taught me about the inner workings of nature and the cycle of life. It also allowed me to have a close relationship with my father and grandfather that has lasted a lifetime. In fact, hunting has enabled me to form a strong bond with my own son that has kept us extremely close over the years. However, some states are currently robbing today’s youth of this opportunity by passing laws that unfairly place age limits on young hunters.

  • I agree 100% with your article. My father started including me on his hunting trips when I was four years old. He started teaching me gun safety as well as conservation. At the age of six I was lucky enough to take my first deer. 21 years later I still have the same love and excitement for the outdoors that I had on my very first hunt. I do not have any children yet, but I look foward to the day I can take my young son or daughter hunting with me. I can not imagine my life without the outdoors. For state, federal, or local governmnets to tell young people they can not hunt, that is just obsurd.
