well it depends on what kind and how you use it. ive had a couple but they were the ones you buy from wal-mart or academy and they break to easy. i would suggest buy the old military kind off the internet they are mor durable but make sure you dont bend it to far when you saw(bend it where it looks like an oval cut in halve not a v).

question isnt a 30-06 a lil to much gun for varmits. i dont know i dont varmit hunt.
try gunbroker.com its kind of like a ebay but for guns instead. but i wont promise youll find one for that price.

a 20 gauge recoil isnt much diffrent then a 12 gauge he should be able to handle but make sure to use the light loads just in case cause then he can grow into a heavier recoil.

i agree with bearhunter the 870 is a awsome and cheap gun it works flawlessly and is easy to take apart and clean.

actually i would suggest using federal ammunition with 85 grains its done the job for my 243.
i have used berkley gulp leechs when i went to canada with the BSA and they worked pretty good. they last pretty long and if you think the smell is rubbing of you can just stick them back in bag.
