  • A girl's first deer camp experience- help!!

Had my wife read your original posting and comment. We both had a good laugh. Thanks and please let us know how it turned out. Yours truly, Kody

Soldier, if you fight as well as you write the enemy is in trouble. Well done! Our Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan who have been battling for years now in the most dangerous part of the country welcomed the arrival of the latest American troops. Morale is high among our troops as they believe in the mission, see things being accomplished and are proud to serve. I am very proud of them, my Grandfather and Father, WW 1 and WW 11 vets, would have shared that pride.
  • Biggest deer I have ever seen

The graveyard buck hunt... sounds like a story worth reading. If you don't succeed you can call it the ghost buck! No doubt there are folks in that graveyard who would have taken pleasure in knowing that urban deer found their way to their last resting place. Yes, the story has possibilities. While there likely no hunting there, that doesn't mean you can't investigate and get another look. Go for it!
  • lasik surgery and shooting

I have been considering that procedure and wondered about its effects when sighting a rifle. Glasses , especially progressive bi-focals don't have the right correction at the inner section that you peer through when sighting the rifle. It can be remedied upon special request but is less than satisfactory. Thanks Charlie Elk.

Sounds like grounds for a fight! Not so good an idea when both parties are carrying guns. Oddly enough that scent of the gutted deer has been known to work for a hunter, I had heard that guys in the south may leave the gutted deer with its chest spread to cool on the ground and await curious deer. Twenty years ago I shot a nice buck and had just finished gutting him when my brother arrived from his nearby stand. I told him that I was going to get the truck but suggested he take over my stand as I had seen some deer on the edge of the bush. I heard the shot just as I got to the truck. I returned to find a beautiful buck 50 feet from my own. He still has that deer at his home as he had it mounted. Sorry your story does not have a happy ending.

Lisa June, you are like a breath of fresh air girl. Your entertaining comments lead me to believe you don't need much advice fitting into any get together. The boys are lucky to have you along and I'll bet your presence adds a new dimension their deer camp. Do what you already do well. However, be very familiar with your rifle and handle it like you know what you are doing. Nobody handling a firearm unsafely is welcome in a hunting party. Study up on your rifle and some of the calibers others will be using. Guys talk guns and you should be able to put in your bit. The muzzle velocity of a 150 gr 30-06 bullet is about 3000 feet per second, a 130 gr .270 bullet travels at about 3100 fps, the old timer known as the 30-30 has a 150 bullet traveling at 2300 fps. These are very common guns to be found at a deer camp and knowing this simple info will impress... notice the old 30-30 is quite a bit slower- faster tends to mean shooting flatter meaning less bullet drop over longer distances. In open area shooting this is significant but in the bush slow works fine. The tree stand offers more than just an opportunity to shoot a deer-- the forest comes alive when you sit quietly at that high vantage point. At day's end, everybody is interested to hear about the porcupine, coyote, skunk or partridge that pasted your stand. It is a reflective time and one that is charged with anticipation. I swear I can feel that big buck coming before he comes into view. Enjoy!
  • Hand Warmers?

In Canada many of us make use of handwarmers. The new ones that generate heat from a chemical reaction after being shaken are especially good. This is not to say that people are moving around in the cold with handwarmers in their gloves and mitts all the time. They quite likely have a couple with them to use in the event their gloves are not up to the task. For example, a skier may make use of them while riding cold chair lift , but remove them to better grip his pole on the slope. In truly cold weather a handwarmer in bare hands without gloves gives temporary relief at best- kind of like cooking on one side by the fire while the other side freezes. The key is to make them affordable, as slim line as possible and to have them last as long as possible. The risk of depending on such warming devices occurs when people dress too lightly for the conditions because of such accessories. I have worked in -50 F in remote locations where freezing your hands could have meant the end of the line. I go for anything and everything that will keep me warm in the winter. Good luck in your venture.
  • Evolution / creationism / Intelligent Design

A young man sat before the monk was frustrated in his attempts to gain some wisdom from his teacher. The monk began to fill the young man's cup with water. He poured until the water overfilled the cup and spilled onto the student and the floor below him. "What are you doing?", exclaimed the student. The monk replied, "Like this cup you are overfilled with your own thoughts and speculations. If you are ever to discover the true meaning of life, you must first empty your cup." Would that not be a suitable conclusion to this discussion Bo and Outdoor Engineer?
  • Evolution / creationism / Intelligent Design

A Oxford history professor, Samual Jackson also taught at the University of Victoria. He took particular delight in pointing out to his students the great success of the church in Western Civilization in "selling real estate for a place they couldn't prove existed." Western religion is sorely challenged to address the theory of evolution because education calls upon us to question the world around us. Fair to say that anyone who pursues his education will come to question religion as presented to them in the scriptures. As the discussion in this forum unfolded it is clear that neither side is short on intellect, it is a question of belief or faith that separates the views. I believe many who accept the theory of Evolution still find a place for faith in God within their belief system. To have faith regardless of the contradictions between the science and the scriptures is pretty miraculous . I believe those who rest their faith on the scriptures must disavow any and all aspects of evolution because it undermines their beliefs. Interesting that those who look for answers through science in a world full of contradictions can still find peace within their personal faith. The supporters of the Theory of Evolution are not leading an assault on faith. The foundations of the theory have little regard for the impact on religious faith and doctrine, because it is irrelevant to their study. On the other hand the religious point of view must lead an assault upon this Theory as it does threaten the foundations of their beliefs. The discussion I have read in this forum between Outdoor Engineer and Bo raises the bar above the banter that I have read in the past. If you guys got any smarter it would be like St. Augustine squaring off with Bertrand Russell. My comments are not intended to offend anybody, I don't know enough and have my feet too firmly planted on the ground to argue these matters with any confidence. However, I believe my observation is correct in pointing out that one side, out of necessity, is in a defensive position.
