  • Are Poachers Ruining Your Season?
    22

The other day, I blogged about some of the worse-than-forecasted deer harvests in the Northeast and the upper Midwest. Mike from Michigan wondered aloud whether the economy might have resulted in a higher incidence of poaching.

"What is around, more than normal, are hungry, out of work people," he posted. "Could some of the deer harvest have gone unreported and out of season?"

Poaching a trophy buck is wrong! My family owns some acres and there is not a decent buck on the whole property due to a**holes that neighbor it. I have always told myself if I encounter a poacher it will be all I can do not to shoot him down in his tracks, until about a year ago. I was grouse hunting (on my land) and came upon a young man (about my age) with an old single shot .22 and a deer at the bottom of a cliff that I frequently sit on to deer hunt. I walked to the top of the cliff and hollered,"What the @#*k are you doing?!". He turned and looked up at me. His face was dirty and his clothes too small. He then began begging me not to get him in trouble with the law, and explained that his pa was laid off and that his family could not afford to buy all their food. He had only shot a doe (which over populate the property), so I walked down and helped him gut the deer (he had no idea what he was doing). I then set up a "deal" with him to allow his family to harvest a doe once a month on my property and to make sure to process the meat correctly(so they didn't get sick). He is now one of my best friends and he says thanks to my (and my family's) understanding, his family is back on their feet and his pa is working. According to the law he was poaching, but according to me he was providing. If you are having trouble with money listen up, there is no real hunter or land owner that will turn down a request to provide for your family, but make sure you fallow their requests. If you are a horn poacher, I think I speak for the true sportsmen and women out there, NOBODY'S IMPRESSED!

There's nothing quite like seeing a load of pellets connect with a flying mass of feathers. In these shots of pheasants and ducks from a local tower shoot, photographer Jeff Coats captures the hits and misses of hunters. Look closely and you can even see the shot frozen in the picture.

I love these pics! Do More!

Animal rights enthusiasts march to the beat of a different drummer. How different? Check out these quotes.

I come from a simple family, God provides 95% of our food by blessing our hunts. I don't understand why these people think it is okay to trash talk my existence, my way of survival. Hunting and fishing.
