He's right about the cause--it's mostly irresponsible pet owners that released pythons that got too big. Now they're breeding. I don't think they can be eliminated at this point. Burmese Pythons are well adapted to the Everglades. They love the water; they camo up real well; and they breed fast--50 to 100 eggs per clutch. I favor an expanded hunt program--we'll have to wait & see what the state decides to do. Whatever happens, the best we can do is control their numbers. Unfortunatly, they're here to stay.

I think people should start killing them on site, it's an invasive species that preys on many animals. Many of them large animals, it wouldn't surprise me at all if they were preying on game animals, I don't know of many studies done for the areas where the pythons are prolific but i bet they make a difference in the natural ecosystem.

You're right Yoda. The scientific studies aren't in yet, but I've noticed fewer rabbits & I've heard similar reports from others. A big python can take a fawn. I think they'll impact the deer population soon if it hasn't happened already. I favor an open season, but we'll have to wait & see what the state decides to do.

There was a snake, I believe a Burmese python that killed a child and was going to to eat it when it was discovered. The snake belonged to the child's mother's shack-up "friend"
I don't see how invasive species can have any protection on any level, but it would be kinda fun to go down there and go snake hunting for the big ones. With rattlesnakes, they can only kill you, but not eat you. Pythons could eat you after they kill you. That would be a lot of adrenaline. But I wouldn't be able to tell my wife what I was doing, she would object to that.

If they taste good start serving them in restaurants under some exotic name of meat and charge a healthy price for the meat.
The hunters can sell the meat to pay for their hunting expeditions, the restaurants can have something new and different to serve and the snake population will be kept in check by the hunters who can continue to keep hunting by selling the meat.
Everyone is happy!

Okay! This is great, the demonizing of a species and the mocking of people that do not conform to the "average person's" way of thinking and choice of pets. What is this 1692 Salem? No not all snake owners are pony tail hippies. I own 2 snakes, one, a red tail boa that I caught in the wild in GEORGIA, yes that is the state of Georgia, just north of Florida and east of Alabama. The second the dreaded Burmese Python; it was given to me by a friend who was responsible (we will go into the difference between responsible and irresponsible later) enough to recognize that he was not capable of keeping it due to its potential size once mature. So let us hate snakes and snake owners and forget about the damage to farm land done by feral hogs. We then can forget about the invasive nutria, green iguanas, feral cats, militant Muslims, carp, and thousands of other species (both fauna and flora) that are much more damaging than the pythons. For those of you who take offense to the militant Muslim comment inject this into your frontal cortex: September 11, 2001. It seems to me that most Americans, as usual, have their priorities out of order. The cat comment will also have someone's dander up; well check this out, when you let fluffy out to take a crap, how many native songbirds does he eat? Did I mention irresposible? More to come. We will have a flaming good time.

Hey Hunting4sanity, I'm curious how you feel about hunting them. I'm also a snake owner and I agree with your comment about responsible pet owners. But I strongly support efforts to control the wild population. These snakes don't belong in the everglades.

Hunting4sanity, hold your horses. If you check other posts you will find most sportsman on this site in favor the removal of invasive species. I favor the removal of feral pigs, cats, and dogs. You are reacting to having your ox gored, and no one likes that when on the receiving end. Any animal that becomes a problem (like snakes, iguanas, cats, dogs, pigs, nutria, whatever) when released into the wild need to be removed. And as for me, if feral animals are in my neighborhood, or I should say, WHEN they have been in my neighborhood, I have been known to assist nature into returning to balance.
I don't think you thought out the context of your statement about the militant Muslims. It is decidedly out of place here.

All right, I need to clarify a bit. Yes, all invasive species need to be hunted down, killed, and if applicable eaten or at least turned into a useful product, including the pythons; in my opinion especially the feral pythons as they are not just a danger to the natural environment, but to the people within. I have held a 20 foot Burmese python, at that length and size (over 200 pounds) and me at a measly 130 at the time, I was not sure he was not holding me. What "gored my ox" was the comment in the video that "all snake owners are irresponsible hippies with ponytails" or some close prejudiced stereotype comment of the like. As for the "Militant Muslim" rant, I just got out of a training class for my job that outlined exactly what that facet of society wants: the complete extermination of Americans, Jews, and British and this was fresh on my mind. We continuously allow these evil creatures to invade our land, not unlike the invasive species of the glades. Bo, I thought it out very well and very carefully. A big snake will grab you because he is hungry, a nutria will dig into a levee and incidentally flood your home because he needs a home, an iguana will leave excrement on your golf course, a cat is a minor nuisance and an easy target, but a Militant Muslim will kick down your door kill you and your family, slowly and painfully if possible then cut your head off and sit it on your chest for others to see. Who is the biggest threat? I am completely in favor of getting rid of the invasive pythons, lizards, rats, and whatever, but it would be nice if we (Americans) would focus on the bigger problems facing our country and prioritize our efforts to making this a better world.

OK, but right now there are NO militant Muslims in the US, hunting down Americans, cutting off their heads or any of the other things you mentioned. As an Army veteran, I say leave that to the guys who are sworn to do that over there, so the bad guys don't come here. I have no problem with our guys, and I applaud them for their service to our country, doing whatever it takes to remove the filth from the surface of our planet.
That being said, have you written your congressman about the conviction of entirely too many of this nation's best for "War Crimes" that took place under conditions, most Americans cannot begin to imagine. Much as a snake operates on instinct, our politicians are operating on a survival instinct and are willing to let true American Heroes go down for acts committed in a war zone that are unpleasant to hear about. I believe it was General Sherman who said "War is Hell".
When we ignore the travesty of justice inflicted on true Heroes, we as a culture are no better than the people trying to destroy us, because we are helping them destroy everything this country used to stand for.

You better wake up and smell what the politicians are shoveling; I am one of the ones who are "doing whatever it takes to remove the filth from the surface of our planet" on this side of the lines, not military but LE, and brother let me tell you they have infested our homeland like roaches in a fast food kitchen. There are two Al-Qaeda training camps (sleeper cells) in my state alone that we can't touch because they fall under the protection of how the courts are putting it "constitutional law". Which is trash, we declared war on terrorism, they are terrorists, therefore we can (under Geneva as well as NATO) go in and close them down under martial law. Our officials are just too liberal and scared to piss off the ACLU to allow it to happen. I give a big kudos to our troops too. If you do not believe me about the presence of these evil creatures (Militant Muslims not politicians) in America, I can back it up with proof; as soon as I can find it in our training division, I have a video of a protest with guys wearing towels on their heads screaming "Death to America" and stomping Old Glory in New York City.
