Texas-born Simon Hughes, 5, doesn’t look intimidating. But put a gun in his hands and pit him against an 800-pound alligator and it’s a different story. Courtesy of FoxNews.com.
Simon Hughes is a lot braver than I am – there is no way that I could climb into a boat and shoot an 800-pound alligator with a .410. Congratulations to him on his #2 Texas alligator!
I question whether a small boy with a small shotgun is an appropriate match for giant gator hunting. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to see parents introducing their kids to wildlife and to hunting, but there's just so many ways this could go wrong.
I think that how young is too young is a decision for the parents to make. I wouldn't take a 5 yr. old on one of my gator hunts, but I wouldn't rule out a kid that's a little bit older. It depends on the kid. If he listens well, can sit still, & he's OK in a boat in the dark, I might take him.
I don't know Texas law, but I question using a .410 on a gator. We use a .44 magnum bang stick. Even with that, if you miss the brain by just a little, it doesn't kill the gator--just stuns it.
I would have the same concerns as seadog and dneaster3. I suspect Dad had his own firearm ready to back up the little guy. It made for a good story with the little boy shooting the huge gator but if this had gone wrong the same media people would have crucified Dad. They would have focused upon the improper use of a firearm by a child and so the blame game would have raged! Fortunately, all is well and Mom, Dad and the rest of the family will have the great pleasure of watching this boy grow up. You don't get confident kids like this one without the foundation of a loving and caring family. Still, I would like to have heard Mom's comments to Dad about this hunt!
I cannot believe it in any way. The parents of this child are A)either dumb and dumber or B)not paying attention.
Was this a real hunt or was it just an in tank shooting?
Give me a break. Next they will have gator catch and release.

So Chaletaway, you believe this thing is a sham and the Mom, Dad, Grandparents and community are part of a conspiracy to accomplish what???... make the kid a celebrity, give the town some free promotion or are they completely sinister and staging a 'feel good David and Golith type story??
Clearly this loving family has no other agenda then to raise a happy kid and their community looks like a safe place to raise a family. I don't believe their character or intelligence is at issue here. You on the other hand?
I agree with talor1. Why ARE people getting negative points for saying good job on what the boy done? I would be the proudest grandfather around if my grandsons had the nerve to even try doing something like that.

Check out a preview of Brandon Steele's Alaska Grand Slam hunt. He battled the Alaskan wilderness for his shot to take home brown and black bear, caribou, and more.
