Removing Phillips head screws can be tedious, especially if they’ve been sitting for a long time. They strip out easily and always seem to be much tighter than necessary. To avoid stripping these screws, first clean the head so that a screwdriver can be inserted without debris clogging it up. Second, use a hammer to tap the screwdriver into the screw head–this gives the screwdriver a stronger positive contact with the head of the screw, which greatly decreases the chances of stripping it out.
