A Quebec woman made headlines early this year when she reeled in a 500-plus-pound Greenland shark through a hole in the ice. Diane Guillemette fought the nearly 10-foot-long shark for more than an hour and a half before hooking her line to a snowmobile and using it to pull the beast onto the ice. Bummer for Guillemette that after making the papers for her catch, it was discovered she didn’t have the proper fishing permits. Fortunately, she received only a warning.

What really should have made headlines was the fact that she found sufficient ice on which to land the shark. Warmer than usual temps throughout the north this winter kept many waterways from icing up.
