Outerwear 2005

High-tech is on the move into the hunting world

Outdoor Life Online Editor

This will be a big year for change in the outerwear industry. More high-tech fabrics and designs have migrated from the mountaineering and ski business to the hunting segment. The products are constructed with lighter fabrics and manage moisture more effectively.

If '05 will be known for anything, it will be as the year that Scent-Lok invaded every nook and cranny of the outerwear business. W. L. Gore has partnered with the Scent-Lok company of Muskegon, Michigan, to form what some believe to be an overwhelming strategy that should have mainstream hunters (not just bowhunters) lining up to buy pants, jackets and underwear this fall. You'll also see a wider variety of manufacturers selling other scent-suppressant-brand clothing across the category.

Leather boots with lighter and more efficient insulating materials continue to increase in market share. Offshore manufacturing has contributed to lowering the SRP prices of many of these new boots.

Across the spectrum of soft goods, practical street pricing has fallen again this year, often at the expense of retailer profit. Manufacturers hope that this trend will translate into more pairs of boots and new high-tech garments per average hunter, in turn driving more sales at the retail counter. Whether you embrace the new pricing strategies or not, soft goods will still likely provide the most turns on the floors of retailers in 2005.

Here's a look at some of the new attire that will keep your customers drier, warmer and less odorous in the coming year.

Allegheny Trail
MIA since the mid-'90s, one of the most missed camo patterns in the industry has returned. The Allegheny Trail Company will release several outerwear items in the classic Tru-Leaf camo pattern designed by Kelly Cooper. The line, which includes jackets, pants, caps and vests, will reach retailers in the fall. Also to be released this year is the new Tru-Leaf Maximum camo, which combines the visual qualities of Tru-Leaf with natural limbs and branches to create a three-dimensional effect. Booth #6108. Natural Gear
**Second generation for natural gear **
The Shot Show will see the introduction of the second generation of camo from Natural Gear, adhering to the principles that have made the original pattern successful with no shadows, sticks, or leaves. The new SC2 adds moss and lichen to give depth and color to fit any terrain, both in the spring and fall hunting seasons.

Its distinct vertical orientation helps it blend into nature's vertical environment by combining soft, natural hues of green and incorporating them into Natural Gear's open, broad-based pattern, to ensure hunter success. Booth #6114. (800-628-4327; www.naturalgear.com)
